'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Pompey Chimes (25)

What happened on Friday with Pompey and the media? Lets take a look.

The Daily Mail claimed that Harry Redknapp was stepping up his hunt for Fredi Kanoute. I am not saying this might not be the case but their basis for this is purely on Redknapp's admission that he 'likes Kanoute a lot'. The same paper claimed that we were closing in on a £16million double swoop for John Utaka and David Nugent.

Later it was revealed that - or at least alleged - that we had placed a bid for Utaka, with this bid being rejected by Rennes. This was covered in full by Vital Pompey in this article Move not as imminent as Utaka thinks.

Last weekend Pompey's 'apparent' interest with Blackburn defender Ryan Nelsen returned. The Mirror claimed that his signing of a new contract has ended Redknapp's yearlong pursuit of him. I know we were reported as bidding for him last summer, but my thinking was that was the end of the matter?

Dejan Stefanovic's place in the starting line up seems assured for the time being as Redknapp confirmed that he would retain the captaincy this season. Again this was covered in full by Vital Pompey in this article Dejan retains the armband.

The thing that really caught my eye was the news in The Sentinel - a local paper to Stoke I believe - claiming that ex Pompey manager Tony Pulis was desperate to sign Andy Griffin on a permanent basis.

He returned to Stoke - after a decade away - on loan for the majority of last season and Pulis wants him back 'I am hoping we will get it done, but whether we can or not I still don't know.

'I am desperate for him to sign for us'.

I did not even realise he was still here until I read this, as I thought he had already left! I am sure something will be sorted out to enable to go - and when he does I do not think he will be missed too much.

I cant think why Andy Griffin is still at the club, it would make sense to let him go an use his wages to fund another player, i think the same could be said for Andy O'Brien who was pre-season training with us. Neither should play next year so let them move on.
Owenspompey
I thinks its fine to let Griffin go....pls pls pls get rid of O'brien!!!
CharlieChimes
Yep, neither is ever going to make our team again, send them away to ply their trade in some other teams first team!
Tantona
Frankly, if the news that caught your eye was that Griffen would go to stoke, then we ARE in trouble about strikers...
pompeycarpet
Rug, i think there is a mis quote in the second to last paragraph it should read "I must be desperate to want to want sign Griffin for us" i hope that has cleared it up for the nation
russellm
well pompeycarpet i felt the main summary point i took had to take a different view from the striker route for a change mate - so thougt i would give griffin his moment of glory, god knows he needs it... plus there was the added bonus i would give us something different to talk about :) i thought they had missed something out in the quotes russell :) poor andy griffin...

I'd imagine that both are on very good Prem wages that they can't get in the lower leagues. For Griffin it's a case of 1st team football whilst still being paid by Pompey & for O'Brien the wages pay for the grazing, hay & carrots that all donkeys are entitled to.
storagematt
You pay carrots, you get donkeys obviously! To be honest, I don't see why these two couldn't do a great job for a mid-table championship side. Well, Griffin certainly.....not as convinced by OB. Griffin would be better at Charlton anyway, Thatcher would be cacking it.
Tantona
Tony Pulis is nearly as desperate for Griffin to go to Stoke as I am !!
lincspfcfan
Who???? We must of had 2 changes of kit since these two played
pentonpompey
im not sure that O'Brien is as bad as Griffin, oh who cares they are both Sh1te
russellm
Griffin was actually quite deceptive, as he was slower than he looked !! O'Brien was just a bad buy and should be allowed to go to Bournemouth where he will be fine and add to his collection of international caps.
Owenspompey
Agreed Owens, the QE2 turned quicker than Griffin
