Dejan retains the armband

Dejan retains the armband

Harry Redknapp has confirmed on the Pompey site that Dejan Stefanovic is to remain as captain for a third season.

The one time club record signing - when Redknapp signed him during his first stint at the club - was first given the armband by Alain Perrin for the 2005/06 season and has kept it ever since.

When Sol Campbell arrived last summer many expected him to take over, but Stefanovic retained this role, with Gary O'Neil filling in when needed - Campbell was next in line.

This is the clearest indication that - like it or not - Stefanovic is set to be the first choice left back this season, at least to start with.

I like the fella but he did not have his greatest season in 2006/07 - injuries did not help - but to retain a starting place on merit in my thinking he will have to improve or we could end up carrying him - and we cannot afford this.

Lets hope he had a bad one due to the op he needed, and the fact he had new and better mates to play with. this year he can consentrate on his own role, from the start and make a name for himself. Lets hope anyway. Otherwise, lets hop Harry doesnt just keep him in the team as he is captain. He could become club captain as opposed to team captain, and leave the slot open for competition.

Surpised by this. I thought Dejan would do well to get on the bench, let alone play on a regular basis to justify being captain. Unless he is our new surprise striker.

well, actually, whilst his performances wern't great, if you look at his win percentage when he was in the team, i think it was much higher - allthough im not sure. His time out of the team coincided with our drop of form. coincedance? maybe he is a motivational captian - we just dont know ,as we arnt in the team.

Dejan is a great club man, but he is not the best left back at the club is he ? He would be behind Pamarot, Traore, Herman and even Matty for that job surely. Even Crainie can play at left back and he does have pace. Dejan should be in the side when we are down to the 'bare bones' which will happen in January due to the African Cup, injuries and suspension. There is no room for sentiment now, if there are better players they should play and Sol should be the skipper !!

whilst i understand Sol does not want the responsibility unless Dejan is a non playying captain this is a step backwards

whilst he is committed that on its own is not enough, he is too imobile, and too slow therefore got caught out a lot.

I like dejan, been a superb servant; but surely he won't get many games at left back, will he?? Even Lauren would be a better choice, at least he is virtually guaranteed to play week in week out. Puzzled by this...

yep me to, i think a chat must have been had what with the arrival of cranie etc, if sol doesnt want it i would have assumed it would have gone to Gary ON. pentonpompey even Lauren would have been a better choice ??? Not sure i am reading that right as when fit Lauren is far better than Dejan clear class and to me he is the only one who looks on a par with Sol. I reckon storagematt has it right, perhapse for surprise we should put dissapointment.

This is an absolutely ludicrous decision; Dejan's performances in the second half of last season were well below the mark, and I really don't see how he can be considered first choice at left back or even as a backup central defender. I know he's been a tremendous servant for the club, but I'm thinking it's time he was sold on so that he can get the guaranteed first team football he deserves.

GON, Sol or even Jamo would be better choices for captain in my eyes.

Evans - Right back or right midfield?

Drew Talbot and Adam Buxton are fit but Gareth Evans continues to fill in at right back. Should this change? If so where would it leave the battle between Evans and Carl Baker?
