Dejan retains the armband

Harry Redknapp has confirmed on the Pompey site that Dejan Stefanovic is to remain as captain for a third season.

The one time club record signing - when Redknapp signed him during his first stint at the club - was first given the armband by Alain Perrin for the 2005/06 season and has kept it ever since.

When Sol Campbell arrived last summer many expected him to take over, but Stefanovic retained this role, with Gary O'Neil filling in when needed - Campbell was next in line.

This is the clearest indication that - like it or not - Stefanovic is set to be the first choice left back this season, at least to start with.

I like the fella but he did not have his greatest season in 2006/07 - injuries did not help - but to retain a starting place on merit in my thinking he will have to improve or we could end up carrying him - and we cannot afford this.

Lets hope he had a bad one due to the op he needed, and the fact he had new and better mates to play with. this year he can consentrate on his own role, from the start and make a name for himself. Lets hope anyway. Otherwise, lets hop Harry doesnt just keep him in the team as he is captain. He could become club captain as opposed to team captain, and leave the slot open for competition.
Surpised by this. I thought Dejan would do well to get on the bench, let alone play on a regular basis to justify being captain. Unless he is our new surprise striker.
well, actually, whilst his performances wern't great, if you look at his win percentage when he was in the team, i think it was much higher - allthough im not sure. His time out of the team coincided with our drop of form. coincedance? maybe he is a motivational captian - we just dont know ,as we arnt in the team.
Dejan is a great club man, but he is not the best left back at the club is he ? He would be behind Pamarot, Traore, Herman and even Matty for that job surely. Even Crainie can play at left back and he does have pace. Dejan should be in the side when we are down to the 'bare bones' which will happen in January due to the African Cup, injuries and suspension. There is no room for sentiment now, if there are better players they should play and Sol should be the skipper !!
whilst i understand Sol does not want the responsibility unless Dejan is a non playying captain this is a step backwards
whilst he is committed that on its own is not enough, he is too imobile, and too slow therefore got caught out a lot.
I like dejan, been a superb servant; but surely he won't get many games at left back, will he?? Even Lauren would be a better choice, at least he is virtually guaranteed to play week in week out. Puzzled by this...
yep me to, i think a chat must have been had what with the arrival of cranie etc, if sol doesnt want it i would have assumed it would have gone to Gary ON. pentonpompey even Lauren would have been a better choice ??? Not sure i am reading that right as when fit Lauren is far better than Dejan clear class and to me he is the only one who looks on a par with Sol. I reckon storagematt has it right, perhapse for surprise we should put dissapointment.
This is an absolutely ludicrous decision; Dejan's performances in the second half of last season were well below the mark, and I really don't see how he can be considered first choice at left back or even as a backup central defender. I know he's been a tremendous servant for the club, but I'm thinking it's time he was sold on so that he can get the guaranteed first team football he deserves.
GON, Sol or even Jamo would be better choices for captain in my eyes.
I thought about Jamo but to me he seems mopre of a thinker than a doer, so really it has to be Sol ideally as he has the presence or Gary O'Neil as he has the work rate, but i noticed last season when he had the responsibility his game level dropped a bit
i could be mis interpreting what you say russell, but i tent disagree slightly with what you say. i thought that on the whole primus was better than sol last season so i would say that lauren is the only one on a par with sol and primus :)
stefanovic needs to improve or the fans will really turn on him if he stays in the team just because he is one of 'arry's boys' - and that would be a great shame for a great servant to the club... he will get my benefit of the doubt to begin with, but if he does not raise his game he has to come out of the team, captain or not... tbh i am not a big fan of keepers being captain, as how can they influence things all over the pitch as an outfield player would - so that rules out jamo in my thinking, so o'neil is the man if sol does not want it... but will o'neil even be a regular 1st teamer next season?
Sorry, just to claer up any confusion with my last post. What I meant was, i thought that Lauren would be a better choice as Captain because; as Harry has said he is one of his dead serts for a start. Not because i don't think that he is a far better player than Stef. I agree with you Rug that GON might just not be a regular choice for every game next season. Consistancy is what is needed.
I see what you're saying about Gary not necessarily being a regular starter; his best position is far and away in the middle, and those spots appear to belong to Muntari/Pedro at the moment.....and everyone knows he's not a natural right winger (not that I'm saying he doesn't try his heart out playing out there). It will be an interesting contrast to last season having some healthy competition for places, rather than having to draft in people who wouldn't necessarily be first choice to plug the gaps (eg Hughesy and Pamarot, who both did extremely well when their chances came up).
and in the vein of clarification i do think Lauren would be a good captain probably better than Sol or GO, he was quite commanding at the gooners when i saw him. However the fact is he is suceptible to injuries. But equally i have asked how it will work with GO in the middle on another posting but he wouldnt be a bad captain, highly motivated and loves the club, no doubting that. Sol apparently doesnt want the responsibility and there is no doubt in my mind Linvoy was his best last season but i feel that his newly found confidence is largely down to the effect Sol. Apart from the few weeks where Sol was playing with injury he seemed to me to be superior to Linvoy as a player. Perhapse HR will to go with the thinker choice of Pedro or Jamo, as these two will be first choice
yep, good point russ, mendes is quite possibly the first name on the team sheet - other than jamo - week in week out, even with people like sol and record signing muntari et al around so could be a sound captain... he is a good leader too...
Club captain I could understand, but team captain with huge doubts over a regular starting place ?? Strange decision........... but i'm happy to accept that 'Arry knows best !! (For now ) lol
Lauren does not strike me as captain material, he is a steady player, but not a leader. Jammo would be the most vocal, but are keepers the best for the job? Distin did the job at City for a while, but Sol is the man, he lead the team last year with the way he played. Gary O'Neill will play more games than he will miss, injuries accepted,so it must be between him and the Sol Man, or Jammo.
my concern with jamo is the fact he cannot influence all areas of the pitch if he were captain, outfield players are also a better option tbh i feel anyway...
Yes you are right rug, but he is a big influence on the side and when he talks or shouts they do seem to listen to him. Maybe if Pedro had a better command of the language he would be an option, as he is the lynchpin of our midfield.
