'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Mvuemba cost less than £1million

When Harry Redknapp was talking to sky sports news to confirm he 'liked' Nigerian international John Utaka it was also revealed that Arnold Mvuemba cost less than £1million, 'the fee was well below £1million and I think we've got good value.

'If you went after a young player in this country - an Under 21 international - you certainly wouldn't get him for that kind of figure.

'I think he's a kid with a big future'.

If we have signed Mvuemba for less than £1million he is more than 'good value' he is an absolute steal.

We might not have a lot of him last season, but I certainly saw enough to think even the reported £2million we were believed to have paid for him would have been amazing value for money - less than £1million is quite literally robbery on Rennes.

Redknapp also revealed how he has watched Utaka several times and was 'always impressed with him'.

My thinking is that Redknapp would be planning to use Utaka more as a wide player - if he even signs him from Rennes that is - as he has made no secret of the fact that he would like strikers and wingers.

Agreed. Arnold only played a few games, but then didnt he only arrive in january??? or am i wrong (As Usual). But as you say, he impressed with the few appearances he did make, so i thought 2 million would be a good price. but 1 million, that leaves enough money for us al have a Party.
Midge
Surprisingly cheap for Mvuemba being that earlier reports indicated he might cost 2.5 - 3 million. Did look useful on the few occasions I saw him, and another young signing.....might shut the scummers up with their 'old players only' gags.
Tantona
yep, it was middle of jan that he arrived mate... what was it joe kinnear said when we 'stole' matty taylor from luton - 'at least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask.' i wonder if 'arry was wearing it this time?
pompeyrug
Glad to have him & if Utaka arrives he will help him settle in. If the price is as low as they say then we have a bit more to spend on other strikers.
storagematt
who cares how much we paid? is he any good and will he get better?
The Rabbi
From what we have seen, i think so. He is big & strong & an eye for goal. He should get better with experience & is a good addition to the squad.
storagematt
Rabbi from what i have seen of him i think that is a yes to the first one and he can only improve with games so i suspect a yes.

5 live says Pompey are expected to confirm Nugent on Monday, it was be quite nice if they are finally right
russellm
A lot can happen in four days.
Et_tu_Pompeii
yep it can, but i would expect a decision to be made by that time - as that will be almost a week after talking terms... it is not essential, but i think it would be ideal to have signings in place by the end of the month - latest - so they can get some pre season behind them...
pompeyrug
Well done Pompey for snapping up Arnold, he is another for the future, now Peter Storrie can try to deliver the striker we need, Everton have now turned their attention to Jason Koumas according to the media up here on Merseyside and have no interest in Nugent at 6 million. Lets hope that this story is true !!
Owenspompey
Re Nugent - by monday Real madrid could have snapped him up. don't forget the business with michael carrick a few years back when Arsenal ballsed up the whole transfer allowing tottenham to come in. I wouldn't be surprised if he's holding out for time (ie everton to buy him) like he did with Sunderland. prophet of doom speaking. over and out.
The Rabbi
I wouldnt be surpried if we didnt get nugent. If we do, and we get Utaka, the Utaka will almost certainly fit into a wide roll, allowing gary o'neil to move into his favoured (overcrowed) central position. But still, a big IF, but i am still hopefull.

Its all pretty exciting at the mo! I think we have made some great signings! some young, some experienced. Lets a get a couple of good strikers & I am a very happy man!! if you start looking at the team now, as I'm sure everybody rolls it over in their heads on a daily basis,we look pretty damn strong!!! time for the strikers....
CharlieChimes
Less than a million!!!!!!! BARGAIN....John Terry got more than that for his wedding pics
pentonpompey
i heard he paid more than that to a girl from cobham to not spill the beans, local rumour is she "joined" with the bank of JT, she had to accept a small deposit, then won a very large one to follow phnar phnar
russellm
i wouldnt be surprised if the nugent deal fell through, i also understand that he has supported everton all his footballing life, but he is a proffesional and all the media are now picking up the story, with Everton currently looking else where
russellm
At the moment, i ama very happy man, whether we get strikers or not! (although i could be happier :) ) Just remeber, we have a brigh future, so even i we dont make europe this season, then we have many yearsto come as we have signed some good young playors.
pompeycarpet
harry has a point - if you want an england U21 player its 5million plus. why are english players so darn expensive?
Dales_Dad
because we are the best ....................
spoiler
.................. at missing penalties!!!! lol
spoiler
The English market is over inflated for one reason, there are so many foreigners in the Premiership that any Englishman to make a mark becomes apremium, and his price goes through the roof, ie; reserve team striker from Man U £6m
paultsmouth
"because we are the best ...................." - actualy, its cos we are the worst...and so any decent english playor will cost a bomb :)
pompeycarpet
What a Steal, a player of his ability is worth more than a reported 2 million, but if redknapp says he got him les then a million then we ot an absulute bargin, how did he pull that 1 of? redknapp always seems to suprise me lol
pompeydave14
no spouiler has a point we do do a good penalty miss
russellm
deey do dat dont dey do de do datmiss a good penalty la
