Utaka claims he is on his way

Utaka claims he is on his way

John Utaka claims he is 'on the verge' of signing for Pompey - having spoken to Nigerian teammate Kanu to gain advice about such a move.

The News is claiming he said 'Yes, Kanu has spoken with me about Portsmouth.

'What he told me is personal to me but I am really looking forward to joining him at Fratton Park and playing alongside him in the colours of Portsmouth next season'.

Okay - we have either missed something, these quotes are from a while back or there is something we do not know about the Kanu situation - unless of course a week-to-week contract he is currently on is what he has been hankering for all along.

I am not saying he will not sign but will he really be playing alongside Kanu next season? If so someone has to back track - and neither party seem that willing to do so, with Kanu now technically a free agent.

The reports are he will sign from Rennes for around £5.7million. But would this include Niko Kranjcar going the other way - as recent talk had claimed? This has been denied but still remains unclear.

A common occurrence every time we are 'linked' with a player plus cash move sees us saying 'this cannot happen', but I again find myself saying this cannot happen with Kranjcar!

We did not see him at his best last season, but he showed signs of this. A full pre season behind him and more of a run in the side and we have a potentially world class talent here, with the ability to fulfil his tag of being 'one of Croatia's finest ever products'.

Utaka has been linked with Pompey on and off for sometime now but I still do not know too much about the fella. I do know his record of 1 goal in 4 matches with Lens was not that great, but with Rennes he has a record of almost 1 in 2 - that is more like it.

This one isnt done yet, Rennes say the deal is contingent upon Krunchie going the other way. The club have this morning quite rightly (in my view) said no. the other issue is if Kanu does stay then we will have two strikeers away for the ACoN

Utaka has been my favourite of the potential foreign signings. Some good vids of him on Youtube, however remember that watching him waltz through a French league defence is more akin to how he'd be against a Championship side, not the Prem, but the skill is there. He's got good close control to run through players and he's got good technique when striking the ball from distance. His scoring record is improving which is a good sign. You could see him working well with Kanu or Benji. Or Harewood ;)

Eduardo da silva from Dinamo Zagreb, goes to Arsenal for 20 mil eur. Two weeks ago I told you about this great player...I thinks that is better that he go in Portsmounth, becouse he is young and he have a time for bigger clubs Ports. don't have player like Kranjcar, he have the best pass in Pompey, before he came in Portsmouth, he almost sign for Rennes

Come on arry, it's time to play your striker cards and get the deals done. Instead of Yakubu, Defoe or Nugent I can see us being left with Harewood, Utaka and Ashton!

completely agree russell kranjcar must stay as we have a great player here - we cannot afford to ship him off too soon as we will regret this if we do... also russell do you not check your email that regularly? if not you may well want to mate...

From what Harry's saying he sees Utaka as more of a wide man, presumably in a similar role to that which Benjani played a few times last season. It worries me slightly that he's willing to take a punt on a player who seems to be a forward with a view to moving him out wide (with unknown results), but isn't willing to take a punt on an out and out striker from the championship (Nugent).

- the daily mail says we have had a bid accepted for nugent - i like the sound of that (but probably not true). The quotes from Utaka seem almost identical too waht he has said in the past, so I think either he repeated himself, or somebody had a look at some historic archives. but whatever happens, keep Niko - the only midfielder that I see leaving is seun davis - but nobody seems intrested.

agreed, the bits about playing alongside kanu seem to make it all the more likely that old quotes are just being re used... i would like to keep all our players but some have to go, so i would agree mate davis could be the one to go at some point? but i am happy to see him stay...

Northampton (h) - Securing home advantage?

Some could view this as a 'dead rubber!' It isn't as Champions Northampton will want to end on a high and Pompey will want 'an advantage' against Plymouth in the play-offs. Right?

Pompey MotM at Hartlepool

Pompey went into the penultimate game with a slim chance of a top 3 finish. A 2-0 win at Hartlepool saw the Blues do what we needed but wins for others ended those chances.
