Makelele talk returns

Makelele talk returns

It is amazing that what Harry Redknapp reportedly said in the Mirror suddenly means that Pompey are going to sign, or at least attempt to sign Claude Makelele.

'We could do a lot worse than sign Makelele.

'If he was available, I'd love to have him in my team'.

My thinking here - unless there is more to it than we have not been shown - is Redknapp is just doing his usual 'of course I like him, I would love to have him here' speech when asked the question on a player, but has not actually said Pompey will make a move for the Chelsea midfielder as the implication is - for £2million.

Makelele - who is moving into the final year of his contract - would be another great addition to the Pompey side, let alone squad but as much as his quality could help us do we really need him? Yep, you can never have too many world class performers - and I would not say no - but would signing him be a priority?

Our priority must remain attracting a striker or striker as the defence - for all it's quality now and the midfield - that is literally overflowing with talent and ability, will not win us matches if we cannot score.

There is always the theory that signing Makelele could send out further messages of Pompey's intent, ergo possibly making others - strikers - look at us more seriously? Although if we won't pay the going rate we will still miss out on them.

I could have sworn that I read reports just yesterday claiming that Makelele had agreed to see out his final year at Chelsea and fight for a first team place anyway?

Do we really want him? As good a player that he is, we've got plenty of midfield players and defenders now, so why spend another £2million on yet another non-forward? With Harry saying constantly that £7million is too much for Nugent but appears to be happy to pay £5million for Harewood, why waste £2million on part of the squad that we already have well covered? Why not add the £2million that would be spend on Claude to the £5million that would be wasted on Harewood and bloody well make an offer for Nugent ?

Cone on Harry, it's not rocket science for goodness sake!

Not only that, but will the St. John's Ambulance crews have enough oxygen bottles available with all these old farts we keep blasted well getting?? Makelele is not exactly a spring chicken at 34 years of age! Born: 18/02/1973 in Kinshasa ( Zaire ).

i would happily have makelele here - if we had already signed a couple of strikers! but as we have still not even signed one much like you TPB i would rather we put the £2m towards getting someone like pazzini or nugent rather than harewood... if makelele signs tho i would not turn my nose up at his arrival...

Neither would I Pompeyrug, I can't argue or moan about his quality and ability - I just feel we have more than enough cover elsewhere and our absolute, paramount, extreme priority is to sign a striker or we are going to find ourselves in the same position as our first four seasons - a relegation fight by Christmas.

Kanu (if he's still here) can't score now, only two league goals in six months. Cole is so old he can barely move, Toddy will never get another chance, Benjani works hard but is more of a provider than scorer, Lualua was a huge let down and disappointment last season - so I ask every single Pompey supporter out there, where on earth do they think the goals are going to come from next season? Have they, the supporters, got the stomach for yet another relegation battle if it comes to it?

Simple Law of Football Physics - in order to win, we have to score more than the other side. In order to score, we need someone to be able to do just that! No goals, no win = no points.

no win might not mean no points tho - it could mean 1 point if we drew :) but i know what you are saying mate... we would be lucky to get 20 goals from the names you mention - it does not fill you with too much faith does it... i keep telling myself we will be okay, we are going to get some strikers so altho im alittle more concerned than i was a few weeks back but i am still not hitting the panic button yet...

I agree with TruePompeyBlue, whilst no one can dispute he was quality, but that is it he WAS quality. Pompeyrug I see the dreaded hand of expediency here, you will recall i thought that the worse thing that could happen for the club is an Avrim grant swap deal for a retiring player. i think we will be getting a Claude as a swap for an Avrim, this is the thing i said i hoped wouldnt happen as it doesnt reallt benefit the club, it does not give us the additional funds trequired for a class striker., and with makalele instead of a class striker we are no threat to Chelski, for me it is a win lose situation, they win, we lose.

avram for SWP - that would be a beet swap, although money would also be nice. atthe moment, I am hoping that when contracts exprire, we can sign new playors, and also now that daren bent has signed for tottnham, we can get defoe. If we dont, i may just reach for the panic button...

Jeeze, I don't believe all this stuff - we buy quality midfielders to add to other quality midfielders so we have a quality midfield where everyone knows his place, be it starting line-up, bench, reserves [but in with a chance on a good day (bad for someone else of course)] and then Harry, because he's bottling strikers left right and centre switches back to 'easy mode' again and starts talking about bleedin' midfielders. HAL, MIDFIELD, IT FINE, NO PROBLEMS THERE, NO WANT OLD REJECT FROM CHELSEA, WANT STRIKER, THAT'S STRIKER, ES, TEE, ARE, EYE, KAY, EE, ARE, STRIKER - S T R I K E R. S T R I K E R, S T R I K E R.
