Pompey Chimes (18)

Pompey Chimes (18)

What happened on Thursday with Pompey and the media? Lets take a look.

Any lingering hopes that Freddie Ljungberg might leave Arsenal for Pompey - or anyone else - were quashed as he told BBC Sport - via his agent - he wants to finish his career with Arsenal.

The Daily Mail ran a story saying how Harry Redknapp would not be taking any gambles on any Championship players such as David Nugent - for £7million - or Billy Sharp, as he just cannot 'afford to take the risk'. Marlon Harewood's name came up again though within the same article, with him seemingly our number one target now.

After sadly passing away at the weekend, the details of former Pompey striker Derek Dougan's funeral were announced - it will take place next week on Thursday 5th July in Wolverhampton.

We may have been priced out of the race for Yakubu - as we are unwilling to meet Boro's £10million valuation - but according to the Mirror City will! And he is set to become one of Sven Goran Eriksson's first signings when he officially takes over.

The thing that really caught my eye though were The News' claims that the proposed stadium move for Pompey is under threat - and the counter claims from Pompey soon after denying this.

The News ran a front page article titled 'the dreams in danger' that claimed we were behind the schedule with our planning application, with this casting more doubts over the likelihood of a move even happening.

Pompey were quick to counter as they issued this statement on the pompey site - assuring us everything is okay, with the club remaining confident everything is on track and building can begin next summer as planned, with us then able to move into our new home in 2011.

Until something is set in stone I will not fully believe it - this is not to say that I do not believe the club, it is simply that we have heard new stadium talk for as long as I can remember. This would be great, but seeing is believing and this is when I will fully believe, but have faith in the club that what they are telling us is how it is.

As far as Pompey's relationship with The News goes, I do not think they will be expecting too many favours for a while at least - the last line in the statement Pompey made things quite clear on Pompey's thoughts on the paper.

I dont think Yakubu will sign for Man City - hes looking to join a club competing for europe - not one fighting off relegation. I dont like all the stuff about harewood, but he does have all the haractoristics that harry likes, so i wouldnt be surprised if he arrived. The stadium plans will be Amazing if they come, but we are still along way off, so its better not to think about. And finaly, its a shame Harry wont take a gamble - sunderland are willing to, so why cant we?

that is a great last comment mate - if only we would alittle... altho with bent now finally signing for charlton maybe we can see what is going to happen with defoe and a possible pompey switch afterall? city will be a far tougher nut to crack this season, we shouldn't write them off to soon...
29/06/2007 09:53:00
Man City are durge and they know it, no one wants to go there and play for Sven the waster, he will waste the 50 million as he has not got the heart or passion for the game in this country. The media will destroy him as will the fans when they lose a couple of games. Shaun Wright Phillips has already said that he would not go there and play for him, and i am sure only players interested in the money will be going to Eastlands. Defoe will go to United or Liverpool, we are kidding ourselves if we think he will come to us, and now we are linked to Makele is he a striker ? Come on Harry take a punt on Nugent or Sharp or Eastwood and pair them with a more experienced player like Mido, Cisse or Marcus Bent or Marlon Harewood we will support a gamble what we dont want is too leave it too late and get nobody.
29/06/2007 10:29:00
i cannot stand mido and would not want him here - cisse on the other hand, he has his faults but he must have something about him so i think we could maybe work something with him... i would still have liked eastwood or sharp, cheap signings that would not need to be a main striker so would not have been gambles anyway... marcus bent? are you being serious mate?
29/06/2007 11:17:00
I dont recon Nugent will be a gamble at all, i think harewood will be much more of a gamble then nugent, nugent isnt in the Englabd squad 4 no reson. i think harry will make the right choice in getting in a couple of good strikers and i hope 1 of the is yak.
29/06/2007 11:42:00
agreed mate for an extra million or 2 we would get an england international that would without doubt score more goals than harewood... with bent now at spurs its time to wave another cheque in front of spurs' face to see where it gets us for defoe...
29/06/2007 12:03:00
Agreed, PR, can't stand Mido either and Marlon Harewood is a name which does NOT look good on a team sheet All due respect to Mr and Mrs Harewood who I am sure are fine people. Defore is not coming and never was so get a grip Pompey fans and get out of the realms of fantasy. It is plain and simple. The current Pompey ethos will get us only so far in the Premiership. like last season, really, that's the best we are going to do. You all know why. We can't afford an established striker, we won't take a chance on one with potential and that leaves us with a bunch of crap knocking at the door. ah, there's a knock now. Mr Cole to see you Mr Redknapp, oh and this old bloke from Chelsea . . . fer Christ's sake.
29/06/2007 13:53:00
cant stand mido either, Harewoodcould be ok, looking at what he did in his first season. Defoe will probably go to Man U or Liverpool, but we could lue him with first team football - dont rule that out! Nugent would be nice, pazzini would be nice, harry spending money would be nice. None of these look like happening, but i will keep up hope, hes always got it right in the past...
29/06/2007 14:19:00
i have said all summer that i reckon defoe will sign - but judging by our reluctance to part with serious money maybe not... my thinking is united will not move for him, nor will arsenal or chelski that only leaves liverpool and my reckoning is what can they offer - apart from champions league football - that we cannot? realistically they are not going to win the league, they wont win the champions lge and we have as good a chance in the cups as them - providing we put out strong sides... will he get football week in week out at liverpool? nope as benitez cannot help himself 'rotating' not to mention strikers they have and look like getting too. would he get football week in week out here? yep... put in a serious offer and you never know - but probably i know deep down we wont pay what is needed so he will go to villa or west ham - what a waste! our reluctance to spent money makes the £7m we paid for muntri all the more suprising - this wont turn out to be another of our proposterous 'biazarre' transfer signings in the end will it?
29/06/2007 14:58:00
by proposterous and bizarre i mean a transfer that is not all it appeared to be on the surface...
