Cranie makes it four for Pompey

Pompey have made their fourth signing today, with the announcement that Martin Craine has moved 17 miles east to Portsmouth from Southampton.

Pompey manager Harry Redknapp was keen to land the 20 year old to provide yet further cover to an already huge defensive contingent. Craine signed a three year contract and he told the Pompey Official Site 'This is a great opportunity for me to progress. I'm very much looking forward to playing for Harry again and working alongside some of the best defenders the Premier League has ever seen. Portsmouth are a very ambitious club both on and off the field and I want to be part of their future success.'

It is not clear at this stage where or even if Craine will feature in the first team next season, but Harry Redknapp was very pleased to land the defender - 'Martin is a very promising young player who has the ability to go right to the very top of the game.' he told the Club's official site. 'I remember when I played him at Man City when I was at Southampton and he did a great job that afternoon on Shaun Wright-Phillips. He has bags of talent and is a great addition to the squad.'

Perhaps now Harry has added to the midfield and also again to the defence, we can expect an announcement of a fifth signing soon in the shape of a striker?

Perhaps this is not such a surprise buy. IF he's got potential, its clever of HR to buy someone who will be happy, initially, to sit on the bench and learn from our fantastic defenders whist being available for a game or two to keep him quiet. I assume Burley didn't rate him at all as The Scum had defensive problems on and off last season and he still didn't figure. Hope HR knows what he's doing. Glad he's English though.

nice to see him sign, and nice to see that 30% of scummers think they will finish in the bottom 5 places in the championship :)

As above, brgrudge giving scum any cash but aslong as it is over 3 years, then they can't spend it all at once. Ideally after 3 years they'll still be in Div 1 or even better Div 2.

Scum defence wasnt that bad for them and Burley felt that he couldnt stop Cranie from leaving and would use the money else where so hopefully their loss (long may it continue) and our gain fair enough. What worries me is who the 65 year old striker willl be that harry gets to restore the age balance of the team.

i would take issue with Huge densive contingent, i think most accept that dej and one or two others dont have much of a future
russellm
yep he is a good signing - to use that old cliche 'one for the future'... it will be difficult for him to win over some fans but as far as i am concenred once he crossed that blue line he became one of us so will be judged on merit - not his past... it will be interesting to see how 'arry does use him as he is not known for playing that many youngsters is he... striker - ideally strikers - next tho definately 'arry!

Can't be Derek Dougan

Anything to spite the scummers.

RIP Derek.
TruePompeyBlue
Great player - what would you give for a player like that now? how much would he be worth?
Et_tu_Pompeii
i actually wrote a little article on the sad passing of the doog - RIP - when i was away, but as it is now a few days on i was not sure if it should be added now? he'd be priceless wouldn't he mate...
pompeyrug
Let us hope that Cranie is up to theinevitable stick he will get, lets not beat about the bush he has come from the Scum so it is all the harder for him. Is Troare on the way out ? is Dejan going to Leicester ? there must be some more players on the way out, as we are now top heavy with defenders. Dougan would be worth a fortune nowadays, a target man who could chip in with 10 - 15 goals a season, god rest his soul.

Sadly, I think his era has passed along with dozens of other passionate players. Derek Dougan, with the appropriate contemporary levels of skill and fitness would be fought over in this 'money is all and bugger the football', culture (with exceptions, of course).
Et_tu_Pompeii
well will this be our left sided Richard Duffey..where is he anyway?
plymouth graham
Hey ETP, just seen harry on his mobile in port solent, he was saying " barry silkman get me that Dougan type. I know what the papers say he's finished but what do they know? there is plenty of life in the old Doug yet"
russellm
feeling guilty about that one now
russellm
Duffy got sent to coventry
russellm
Good point about Duffy - he was the next big (medium sized) thing for the future. I wonder why we keep him unless he still has some potential. So is Craney gonna be like that, I wonder? Is Redders under pressure to sign some young players with potential as we don't seem to produce any (am i wrong here?) let the Scum produce them in their class 1 facilities and then nick them. Marvellous.
Et_tu_Pompeii
sounds like a plan to me mate... seriously tho it is good to see 'arry buying some youngsters as we dont look like producing our own for a while do we, if we do they are flogged or let go too soon! i do worry that cranie could be exactly like that tho mate as 'arry is not one for giving youngsters a crack is he - unless they are 'proven'... time to alter the mould 'arry - i am not asking you to quite break it just yet tho...
