Pompey likely lads? Yakubu

Pompey likely lads? Yakubu

Pompey are being 'linked' with strikers all over the shop, so we are taking a look at the ones most 'strongly linked' - or so we are being told most strongly linked - in turn. They are not in a preferential order just alphabetical.

We know pretty much everything there is to know about Yakubu as we should have seen enough of him from his time at Pompey before he left 'for bigger things' with Boro.

Harry Redknapp remains very much a fan of the man he signed from Maccabi Haifa in 2003 and is linked with him all the time.

It is claimed that offers have been made and rejected, then denials made that an approach was even made or received. Talk of deals involving Gary O'Neil and/or Sean Davis as bait have been 'reported', but these too rejected - with Redknapp insisting O'Neil 'will not be sold'.

He was lazy and went off the boil when his time at Pompey was coming to an end last time, but this was as much due to the fact he knew it was. But I think most - including myself - would welcome a return, even though we would lose him for the African Nations.

Yakubu has certainly also improved as a player, but is there enough of an improvement to warrant a £14million fee?

My thinking - and most others - is we will see Yakubu back as a Pompey player at some point during the summer, so my thinking is this is an almost certain 5 out of 5 rating that Yakubu will be one name we sign.

I hope you are right, now that we have put a bit more class around him he could be even better. He does noeed to get in early as when he dissapears off to the ACoN he could be gone for some 6 weeks... TruePompeyBlue will need to engineer another late night excursion row so he is sent home early. other wise pompeyrug i hopwe you are right

I would like to see The Yak back at FP, playing alongisde a hard working Benjani would be great. Be nice to see Kanoute and Defoe in but doubt the finance is there for all 3.

Bring back the Yak! Who cares if he can be lazy from time to time, we know he's good for lots of goals. Defoe and or Kanoute would both be great as well.

Yakubu would be my top choice of striker out of the one's most strongly linked with Pompey. He just keeps scoring, even when he doesn't look like he's trying. Could bring the best out of Lua Lua and Benjani as well as Toddy. 14 million? Do Macabi Haafia still have a sell on clause or something?
22/06/2007 19:22:00
Since Boro want a kings ransom for him I can't see it. He may stay up north have a bad season, Boro go down & we buy Yak next summer for half the price. You read it here first, mysticmatt.
22/06/2007 20:13:00
mysticmatt will be your new handle mate if this comes off :) £14m is a bit too much i feel but he still is probably the most likely arrival - but not at that price. i think we will have to pay at least £10m to get him back tho... benjani will look good alongside whoever comes in - so long as they can score goals, this would bring goals out off him too i think...

A GOOD POINT pompeyscum, Yak would bring out the best in LuaLua and perhapse that is one of the reasons it has gone quiet on that front. Last season Southgate said "clubs cant affford players who dont want to play for them", i agree with him i think the 14 million price will drop.
23/06/2007 10:51:00
The Yak hasn't doen enough in his time at Boro to justify 14 million but the going rate for goal scorers is an astounding amount of cash so if that's the price, then I suppose we have to pay it. Hopefully the two and a half million we are owed is knocked off THAT price. Better the Yak you know and all that, so this is my best choice + one other.
23/06/2007 10:58:00
well, 14 million would actualy work out at under £0.5million a goal(over 2 seasons - so it could be even less if he stays longer!), so at that rate, it doesnt actualy seem too expensive. Particualy if it were then to make our other strkiers do better. But we will only get him if Boro sign more strikers, so lets hope they get smith!
