'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wrap up the Bent deal will ya Spurs!

The sooner Spurs complete the signing of Charlton's Darren Bent the sooner we would know where we really did stand as far as signing Jermain Defoe is concerned.

When Bent looked like signing for West Ham last week any hopes that I had that Pompey might yet sign Defoe were all but extinguished. As we know, this deal fell through and with it this flame - despite flickering in the wind - remained lit.

Today's Sun is claiming that Spurs 'will listen to offers' for Defoe if they sign Bent. It is pretty clear that Defoe will leave Spurs when - as this is more likely than 'if' - they complete the signing of Bent.

'He's lazy' and 'he'll lose his England place if he plays for Pompey', are a couple of things I have heard as to why Defoe should not or would not sign, but would he be more likely to keep an England place if he went to other 'reported' targets Villa, Everton or West Ham?

Everton maybe, but with the others my thinking would be nope - if he would even lose his place at all at any of these sides - Pompey included? And I am not totally sure he would anyway - so long as he kept playing regularly and kept on scoring, as I feel sure he would.

The 'Redknapp factor' alone is a big draw, but would this be enough to tempt him, or would Redknapp as always be left saying 'I like him of course I do, I would love him at Pompey but I couldn't get him'.

We paid 7million for Sulley Muntari, if we will pay something similar - maybe as much as 10million - we could get him if he would come here.

A lot of 'ifs ands or buts' in this hypothesis but the sooner Spurs complete their signing of Bent the sooner these can be proved right or wrong.

PLAY UP POMPEY!

As a Spurs fan I would welcome Defoe moving out when we get Bent especially if we could do a part exchange deal involving Matty Taylor.
Frank
We'll do the deal when Charlton make contact with the real world. Berbatov 10m, Bent 17m... are they having a Steffi? That would make Defoe worth about 25m and my Gran worth about 500k.
mesmo
defoe is keen on the party circuit though. Im not sure living in Portsmouth would fufil his ambitions of being spotted out in heat magazine every week.
cheddar_green
NO & NO. We're not getting Bent and we're keeping Defoe.(I wish/hope)
ScottDaYid
I'm getting v bored with the Bent story and the nonsense churned out by the red tops! How do the Sun or the Mail know whether we'll sell JD if Bent comes to Spurs? If I was Martin Jol, I'd want Defoe & Bent to form an alternative partnership to Berbs & Keane - a little bit like the alternating partnerships ManUre had in their treble year! So don't get your hopes up yet Pompey!
ParkLane67
agreed mesmo, the asking price for bent is stupid isn't it - i could not believe it when west ham were going to pay 18m or whatever it was... Frank, i will happily take defoe but matty taylor is going nowhere...
pompeyrug
i can see why you would want to keep defoe even when bent arrived ParkLane67, but do you really think jol could keep the lot, even tho mido is off? you are probably as board and frustrated with the bent deal as we are with our search to find a striker full stop...
pompeyrug
17mil for Bent isn't gonna happen. As far as Defoe is concerned, we'll offload Mido first so we'd still need another striker if we let Defoe go.
WookieD
I don't think he'll leave if we get Bent, I think he'll stayanother year at least. Defoe love's Spurs and he's been a great squad player for us. Why would he join a club out of Europe, what would he gain from it... he played in excess of 30 games last year and scored 18 goals, he'd play no more a Portsmouth allowing for a few games rest and injury while they're not in Europe... he'd achieve nothing by leaving.
Dan Mac
defoe wont go to pompey simply for the fact he doesnt and wont have it bad at spurs. he will never win anything with pompey, nor any of the other teams mentioned, and is far more likely to do so with spurs. im not having a dig at pompey, but i was seriously question his ambition if he was to join.
elmo85
no i dont want to lose defoe keep him if its a choice of the two 17m is too much anyway
buckers_07
Defoe is keen on the party circuit??? Got to be honest, I don't read Hello or OK! but I can guaruntee you that Defoe and some party boy. He's a down to earth religious lad, who appears on a christian TV prgramme with your very own 'party boy' Linvoy Primus. Such a random incorrect comment to make!!!
Dan Mac
Fact - Zamora and Defoe will be Pompey Players by Wednesday. Dont ask how i know, as i'm not making any more comment than that. When it happens, then come back ask me how i knew. all i will say is ones a cert, the other is dependant on a BENT deal.
Midge
You do realise Defoe wont move to you even if we do sell him right? He wants to progress if anything!
rzzn
Well said Dan Mac, Defoe is a true pro, never out getting in trouble like alot of the so called 'bling boys'.
ScottDaYid
I think from all the talk Barnards gonna be tested out in the Prem this season. Would still prefer to keep Defoe AND sign Bent. How many more players that dont cut it at Spurs can Pompey want? Murphy and Gardner Harry???
cheddar_green
sources midge sources. ive heard paris hilton wants me to spit roast her. dont ask how i know this, just come back to me when it happens... and i thought only pompey were involved in bent deals judging by that lord stevens report?
elmo85
i look forward to this coming off Midge - i hope you are right... if you are i will certainly be asking you how you knew mate!
pompeyrug
Well, maybe a starting place in the team each week, 40 games + barring injury, addoring and appreciative fans, a team on the up, an English manager, some English players, a team that has had an excuse for underachieving for 40 years, nice blue shirts, heritage ground, site of ancient architectural interest, Champions League football next year etc etc You've got to laugh, haven't you?
Et_tu_Pompeii
Bent 17m, Torres 25m, the worlds goin mad. I blame chelski. Think we'll pay it tho and matt taylor will come in part ex for defoe
GallersTTID
I dont see the point in buying Bent for 12-14mil and then sell Defoe for 10. Why would we sell one of the strikers who produced 60+ goals last season? If BMJ decides to sell JD, Bent has a whole lot of convincing to do.. If we bring in Bent and keep JD. We're gonne have the best strikeforce in the PL. But I think we should drop Bent, and spend all our cash on a left-winger...
kmugaas
And 10m!!?? If Bent is 17m, Defoe is more. Simple Maths I'm afraid and I cant see Spurs letting Defoe go as cheap as you think we will. He is easily 15m. I'm sorry Pompey, I live in Southsea and I have much affection towards my local team but I just cannot see this happening.
rzzn
Sorry that doesn't make sense. 'Why GD would move to Pompey'.
Et_tu_Pompeii
Why the ***** are we still after Bent anyway? Saviola is on a free and Torres is being sold for 15mil which is far better value for money than Bent
superyido
why don't Pompey just sign Bent. he's a much better player than Defoe.
The Rabbi
GallersTTID... Dont forget Real Madrid. 40+mill for Zlatan is ludacris. I would take Torres for 25m in a heartbeat. Only ones worth 40+m is Kaka and C.Ronaldo...
kmugaas
Sadly there are bigger fish with deeper pockets than us. I screamed to buy Defoe when WH were shipping out players but Spurs got there. Having Harry is an attraction for Defoe but that ain't enough.
storagematt
The Rabbi...Why did'nt Bent sign for the hammers? He want to go to spurs. Not west-ham...and not Pompey
kmugaas
You're right about Defoe's chances of keeping his place in the England set up being just as good/bad at Villa. Historically Villa players don't get picked no matter how well they play for their club. Barry being the obvious recent example. Even when we won the European Cup back in 1982 our players were ignored by England. If you're not in London or at ManUre or Liverpool then they don't want to know. Oh and btw we don't Defoe.
Adam Deuce
The worlds gone mad i'd prefer Defoe to Bent any day of the week
Johnny Kipper
i am not struck on bent tbh, so i too would prefer defoe to him - clearly i wouldn't turn my nose up at either tho... i am still intrigued by your comment Midge - i want to know more on why you said what you did, but do not want to wish the days away until wednesday comes tho to find out...
pompeyrug
midge sounds like a lot of other supporters who claim to have 'sources' close to the club. hell, we even have our own one, he goes by the name of terrier hehehe sorry scott...
elmo85
Well I may be completely wrong, but my guess at how events will transpire will be Spurs refusing to meet Charlton's valuation and showing no hurry to sign Bent. Defoe will not be sold during this time. Then after much mess between Charlton and Bent and he demands to leave or will not play again for them or whatever avenue he chooses to punish them for not treating him fairly regarding his value, will then join Spurs at a late point in the window. Defoe will have little time to move and Spurs will try to keep him at least until January and Portsmouth would and should have looked elsewhere all along. Of course Bent could be signed by Spurs very soon and who knows, but I dont expect Spurs to pay 17m whatever happens.
benmcyid
I heard Defoe wants to saty. Agreeing a new contract with a 22% pay rise.
Lonerspur
Couldn't agree more. Come on get it over with!
sandgroanun
Dont want Bent rather have Defoe.
Frisky
You can have Defoe, but we get Matty Taylor as part of the deal
kernowboy
Great to see such a huge contingent of Spurs fans coming on here and giving good, constructive comments, such a refreshing change from that of some other clubs.

I would be very surprised if Defoe came here to Pompey, but his name has been linked with us since Christmas so who really knows? We don't know if Matty Taylor would be part of the deal but I sincerely hope not as he is very much part of the future of this club. I also think Frisky is right too, if I were spurs I'd sooner keep Defoe and not waste money on Bent.
TruePompeyBlue
Midge. You come out with some shiite mate. Why don't you say your sources now rather than later? I can't wait til next Wednesday..when pigs will start flying (according to sources that I will tell you once happened)
dazspurs
I'd rather have Yakubu than Defoe. I'd ratherhave Nugent as much as Defoe. I'd rather have Kanoute as much as Defoe. I'd rather have Utaka and Pazzini rather than Defoe. I'd rather have Lita and Utaka rather than Defoe. I'd rather have Coloutti and Kanoute (what a great sounding forward line) than Defoe. So, Spurs, keep him I don't want him anymore, there are better players out there at less inflated prices. Poetically, it would have to be Coloutti and Kanoute. I feel sports comentators would, possibly, warm to Pompey with this duo. See a softer, more artistic Pompey than those before. Perhaps stop hating us as much as they do at the moment.
Et_tu_Pompeii
Keep them coming guys. i love the way i am now meant to have sources close to the club lol. i never said that, i said i have a source, maybe he plays for the club, maybe i play for the club, I have a lot of chocolate, so why not join my club lol. As i said, before, when it happens i'll admit how i know. Until then i am staying quiet. nLUV the Way the Spurs fans have reacted though, ROFLMAO, you only just finished above us you know, so stop thinking we arent attractive. We are now, and we'll laff last on Wednesday mateys.
Midge
Spuds ahoy.
Lysimachus
Midge i am counting down the days until wed when you reveal the fact that you are indeed jermain defoe :) can you not email me - i promise not to reveal your secret...
