Wrap up the Bent deal will ya Spurs!

Wrap up the Bent deal will ya Spurs!

The sooner Spurs complete the signing of Charlton's Darren Bent the sooner we would know where we really did stand as far as signing Jermain Defoe is concerned.

When Bent looked like signing for West Ham last week any hopes that I had that Pompey might yet sign Defoe were all but extinguished. As we know, this deal fell through and with it this flame - despite flickering in the wind - remained lit.

Today's Sun is claiming that Spurs 'will listen to offers' for Defoe if they sign Bent. It is pretty clear that Defoe will leave Spurs when - as this is more likely than 'if' - they complete the signing of Bent.

'He's lazy' and 'he'll lose his England place if he plays for Pompey', are a couple of things I have heard as to why Defoe should not or would not sign, but would he be more likely to keep an England place if he went to other 'reported' targets Villa, Everton or West Ham?

Everton maybe, but with the others my thinking would be nope - if he would even lose his place at all at any of these sides - Pompey included? And I am not totally sure he would anyway - so long as he kept playing regularly and kept on scoring, as I feel sure he would.

The 'Redknapp factor' alone is a big draw, but would this be enough to tempt him, or would Redknapp as always be left saying 'I like him of course I do, I would love him at Pompey but I couldn't get him'.

We paid £7million for Sulley Muntari, if we will pay something similar - maybe as much as £10million - we could get him if he would come here.

A lot of 'ifs ands or buts' in this hypothesis but the sooner Spurs complete their signing of Bent the sooner these can be proved right or wrong.

PLAY UP POMPEY!

As a Spurs fan I would welcome Defoe moving out when we get Bent especially if we could do a part exchange deal involving Matty Taylor.

We'll do the deal when Charlton make contact with the real world. Berbatov £10m, Bent £17m... are they having a Steffi? That would make Defoe worth about £25m and my Gran worth about £500k.

defoe is keen on the party circuit though. Im not sure living in Portsmouth would fufil his ambitions of being spotted out in heat magazine every week.

NO & NO. We're not getting Bent and we're keeping Defoe.(I wish/hope)

I'm getting v bored with the Bent story and the nonsense churned out by the red tops! How do the Sun or the Mail know whether we'll sell JD if Bent comes to Spurs? If I was Martin Jol, I'd want Defoe & Bent to form an alternative partnership to Berbs & Keane - a little bit like the alternating partnerships ManUre had in their treble year! So don't get your hopes up yet Pompey!

agreed mesmo, the asking price for bent is stupid isn't it - i could not believe it when west ham were going to pay £18m or whatever it was... Frank, i will happily take defoe but matty taylor is going nowhere...

i can see why you would want to keep defoe even when bent arrived ParkLane67, but do you really think jol could keep the lot, even tho mido is off? you are probably as board and frustrated with the bent deal as we are with our search to find a striker full stop...

£17mil for Bent isn't gonna happen. As far as Defoe is concerned, we'll offload Mido first so we'd still need another striker if we let Defoe go.

defoe wont go to pompey simply for the fact he doesnt and wont have it bad at spurs. he will never win anything with pompey, nor any of the other teams mentioned, and is far more likely to do so with spurs. im not having a dig at pompey, but i was seriously question his ambition if he was to join.

I don't think he'll leave if we get Bent, I think he'll stayanother year at least. Defoe love's Spurs and he's been a great squad player for us. Why would he join a club out of Europe, what would he gain from it... he played in excess of 30 games last year and scored 18 goals, he'd play no more a Portsmouth allowing for a few games rest and injury while they're not in Europe... he'd achieve nothing by leaving.
