'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Pompey Chimes (15)

Wednesday was a very quiet day for Pompey and the Tabloids.

Fredi Kanoute's agent Christophe Mongai was speaking in the papers again - this time telling the Daily Star that Kanoute would be interested in signing for Pompey if Sevilla's asking is met, something he had concerns over. This was covered in full by Vital Pompey in this article At last some striking encouragement!

Reports late on Tuesday, early Wednesday in the Independent claimed Boro had rejected a 10million bid for Yakubu. But Boro chief executive Keith Lamb said this was not true.

Harry Redknapp told The News that Gary O'Neil 'is not for sale'. There have been plenty of 'rumours' recently that O'Neil could be sold, more likely used as bait to lure Yakubu back to Pompey. This was another story covered in full on Vital Pompey in this article Gary O'Neil is not for sale.

The thing that really caught my eye though on a quiet day were continued 'links' with Stephen Hunt - which just do not seem to go away.

Reports in the Mirror continued the recent thoughts that the Reading winger will leave the club unless he is given a new deal. He wants his current 10,000 per week increased to 15,000 per week - more in line with the other top Reading players.

Yes a striker remains a priority, but the Irish international has looked very impressive whenever I have seen him and a fee of around 1.5million could secure his signature. My thinking is this would be money well spent and would add a genuine wing threat - something Redknapp is keen on.

Be good to have a winger again
Et_tu_Pompeii
Why don't Reading think he's worth 15 grand?
Et_tu_Pompeii
Did you say whinger or winger Et_tu_Pompeii?? I agree, it would be good. To think of the days when wingers were used extensively brings back memories of exciting, attacking play, when a full back was confronted by someone running at him rather than being by-passed with a long ball or short passing. Heady days!
TruePompeyBlue
I'm not entirely sure about Kanoute. he's not a natural goalscorer, ie he doesn't create goals, he's more of a 6 yd box player. I think we'll have to play a much more attacking game, especially away (no more 4-6-0 harry) in order to provide him with enough chances. He'll probably enjoy playing with benjani though.
The Rabbi
If Spurs sign Bent, that may free up Defoe. Rather have him than Freddie, but rather Freddie than nobody. The winger sounds good & the money shouldn't scare us.
storagematt
yep i would agree fellas kanoute is maybe not the prefered choice but kanoute or no one - kanoute wins hands down, this is not to say that i dont rate the fella tho... when bent goes to spurs defoe will go so storagematt i totally agree mate, the 'redknapp factor' could see him chose us? if we'll pay good money for him... why reading wont give hunt 15 grand a week i dont know - we'll give him that no problems. to quote 'arry 'i like him' but it cannot be followed with 'but we cannot afford him'...
pompeyrug
I'll ask this - Kanoute or Kanu? I know who I'd sooner have.
TruePompeyBlue
Kanoute or Defoe, I think we really need a striker and if we were offered Kanoute last week when "the defoe" rumours started dying down we would have jumped at it.... Until we see the Headline "Defoe'nitely off to Pompey" I would look at any decent striker natural or otherwise.
Sachas_Brother
Apologies for the Pun lads, couldn't resist.
Sachas_Brother
i know what the articles title will be when defoe signs for pompey now then mate :)
pompeyrug

Sachas_Brother

I am given to understand that reading have a wage structure that has a seniority factor built in, but i wouldnt want to lose the guy for a 5k. we should get in there and unsettle him with a bid. I must be honest im not in the we must have defoe crowd. I work in the city and the locals all say he is a younger version of Kanu. Defoe will not work when its tough going, spends half his time sniping at his team mates, he is tempremental and lazy, and probably best used as a super sub type. Now that is supporters of the two clubs he has been at all telling the same story. I'll stick with the running on and six yard box non natural goal scorer. Someone called Hoddle said another player was a 6 yard box, running on non natural goal scorer, he was talking about a bloke called Owen...

I really hope that the link to Hunt is just paper talk, what would he bring to the team ? Dont underestimate Defoe, we know he is a class act and we would be lucky to get him, better still if Mido came with him !! Kanoute must be looking for a big money move, but what a coup if we could secure him. As the season draws ever nearer we have got to hold our nerve, The Yak must be thinking of going as Tuncay and Allialidiare and Alan Smith seem to be Southgates' chosen men.
Owenspompey
i think hunt could bring a lot to this team tbh, he tore apart some pretty mean defences last season so i see no reason for him not to do the same again next season... he would not be a regular starter but bring him on in games and play him in others and he would make an impact i am sure...
pompeyrug
russell i think it is pretty clear that i want defoe, but i also want kanoute, yakubu, pazzini, the isreali fella and everyone else - i just want a striker or strikers :) you would have to start thinking tho that 2 sets of fans could not both be wrong about defoe tho wouldn't you mate...
