Pompey Chimes (15)

Pompey Chimes (15)

Wednesday was a very quiet day for Pompey and the Tabloids.

Fredi Kanoute's agent Christophe Mongai was speaking in the papers again - this time telling the Daily Star that Kanoute would be interested in signing for Pompey if Sevilla's asking is met, something he had concerns over. This was covered in full by Vital Pompey in this article At last some striking encouragement!

Reports late on Tuesday, early Wednesday in the Independent claimed Boro had rejected a £10million bid for Yakubu. But Boro chief executive Keith Lamb said this was not true.

Harry Redknapp told The News that Gary O'Neil 'is not for sale'. There have been plenty of 'rumours' recently that O'Neil could be sold, more likely used as bait to lure Yakubu back to Pompey. This was another story covered in full on Vital Pompey in this article Gary O'Neil is not for sale.

The thing that really caught my eye though on a quiet day were continued 'links' with Stephen Hunt - which just do not seem to go away.

Reports in the Mirror continued the recent thoughts that the Reading winger will leave the club unless he is given a new deal. He wants his current £10,000 per week increased to £15,000 per week - more in line with the other top Reading players.

Yes a striker remains a priority, but the Irish international has looked very impressive whenever I have seen him and a fee of around £1.5million could secure his signature. My thinking is this would be money well spent and would add a genuine wing threat - something Redknapp is keen on.

Be good to have a winger again
21/06/2007 10:15:00
Why don't Reading think he's worth 15 grand?
21/06/2007 10:15:00
Did you say whinger or winger Et_tu_Pompeii?? I agree, it would be good. To think of the days when wingers were used extensively brings back memories of exciting, attacking play, when a full back was confronted by someone running at him rather than being by-passed with a long ball or short passing. Heady days!

I'm not entirely sure about Kanoute. he's not a natural goalscorer, ie he doesn't create goals, he's more of a 6 yd box player. I think we'll have to play a much more attacking game, especially away (no more 4-6-0 harry) in order to provide him with enough chances. He'll probably enjoy playing with benjani though.

If Spurs sign Bent, that may free up Defoe. Rather have him than Freddie, but rather Freddie than nobody. The winger sounds good & the money shouldn't scare us.
21/06/2007 11:56:00
yep i would agree fellas kanoute is maybe not the prefered choice but kanoute or no one - kanoute wins hands down, this is not to say that i dont rate the fella tho... when bent goes to spurs defoe will go so storagematt i totally agree mate, the 'redknapp factor' could see him chose us? if we'll pay good money for him... why reading wont give hunt 15 grand a week i dont know - we'll give him that no problems. to quote 'arry 'i like him' but it cannot be followed with 'but we cannot afford him'...
21/06/2007 12:20:00
I'll ask this - Kanoute or Kanu? I know who I'd sooner have.
21/06/2007 12:53:00
Kanoute or Defoe, I think we really need a striker and if we were offered Kanoute last week when "the defoe" rumours started dying down we would have jumped at it.... Until we see the Headline "Defoe'nitely off to Pompey" I would look at any decent striker natural or otherwise.
21/06/2007 12:54:00
Apologies for the Pun lads, couldn't resist.
21/06/2007 12:55:00
i know what the articles title will be when defoe signs for pompey now then mate :)

As I think we all know by now Oxlade-Chamberlain is the son of former Pompey winger Mark Chamberlain and the brother of Arsenal's & England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Cook - Notts County another tough game

Pompey's form at Fratton has been impressive this season with our home return coming against Notts County off the back of wins at Leyton Orient and a point at Plymouth last Saturday.
