'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Free The Fixtures Campaign

A new group have set up to protest at 3rd parties such as independent websites having to pay for the publication of fixture lists.

All newspapers, sites etc have to pay the fee and 'free the fixtures campaign' question why us fans should have to pay for the 'privilege' of advertising (which is what fixtures basically are) the fixtures for the games we all pay our hard earnt money to go and watch. Vital Football have had to take the stance that we won't publish fixtures due to the costs involved and most independent sites take the same position. For us to do it across the network we would be looking at a fee in the region of 13 000 + VAT, something that just isn't economically viable!

So, if you have an interest, these are the details of the campaign set up. This isn't run by anyone involved with Vital Football but I think like most football fans, we echo the sentiment, we should be able to publish the fixtures as the fans are what makes this game and without us it would collapse.

Free the fixtures campaign:

www.freethefixtures.com

On Thursday 14th June the fixtures for the 2007/08 football season were published. However most fan run websites will not be displaying them....

Football DataCo Ltd is a British company that grants licenses to third parties allowing them to reproduce certain intellectual property such as fixture lists and statistics. Football DataCo is wholly owned by FA Premier League and The Football League. The standard fee for the reproduction of a single team`s fixture list currently stands at 266 plus VAT.

This fee is charged to all 3rd parties including independently owned football fan sites and fanzines. Numerous fan sites have been closed as a result of legal action initiated by Football DataCo Ltd.

We the fans should be free to publish our teams fixtures on our sites.

Please sign the petition and we will present it to the people that are responsible for charging the fans to publish THEIR fixtures!

greedy ********s... will it really help Et_tu_Pompeii? my thinking is probably not but i am happy to sign anyway in the hope it might...

it angers me so much that they can get away with it, its effective monopolising unless you pay. and its not even just an standard release fee its 13,000 thats outrageous

Big deal tbh. All the big media sources are obviously enough to tell everyone what the fixtures are and even if it's iun the case of a unoffical fan site I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with simply linking the fixtures, say via the Pompey website.

it is not the same tho is it if the aren't right in from of you here. technically you are driving people away from the site if you have to send them elsewhere to see these fixtures - altho i would rather send them to the pompey site than bbc or sky any day of the week... it is more the principle of the thing Lysimachus as much as anything esle...
pompeyrug
i think we should raise the 13k (in one pence pieces) to buy the fixtures back.
The Rabbi
mate, i have quite a few in my 'swear box' so if we all pool together the coppers we have - come on fellas we all know we keep them really for such occassions as this - i think we could pay off these greedy gits... we could get it changed in those coin changing machines they have but i would rather see their faces when we turned up with 13k in 1's, 2's and at a push 5's...
pompeyrug
I have a few 1p's and 2p's, i wouldn't give them the silver though. I'm really glad this site took a stand against it, although its such a shame we have to source the fixtures elsewhere
pandapops
I suppose I see what you mean about linking to other sites also drives vital fans away, but as long as everyone knows via third party (eg. BBC, Sky, whatnot) and as well as there not being any other unoffical fan sites with the fixtures, I'm pretty sure you won't lose anyone to rival sites. I think that there is simply not much point in dwelling about it, but anyway good luck to the campaign to stick one up the extremist right wing *****s. arrrr
