'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Blues can't pull this off, can they?

There had been some talk of a 'reported' Pompey interest in Chelsea's Claude Makelele - a World Cup and European Championship winner - but I had not heard this myself until talk of it first here on Vital Pompey.

But I have now come across news that L'Equipe claim Pompey 'have shown a strong interest' in the French international midfielder - along with Paris St Germain.

I know Pompey have pulled off some signings in the past that we did not think possible, but even this is must be beyond us? Not that I think he is too good for us as I do not think he is at all, I am just not certain moving for him could or even would happen, but a lot of us thought this about Sol Campbell last summer!

You cannot doubt a player of his quality but at 34 is even he too old for Harry Redknapp - I would think that many of us would like to see this but do we really think it is possible?

PLAY UP POMPEY!

personnaly I think Makelele is an outstanding player & regardless of age would lovetoo see him in a Pompey shirt! still, I do doubt this very very much!

I don't doubt Harry can pull it off. Let's face it, we got Paul Merson, Tim Sherwood, Steve Stone, Teddy Sheringham, Sol Campbell and David James - all ex-international players for England and all came mostly due to Harry.

Bring it on!

Shame we hear the news, alerts a few others. Brilliant if we could get him.
storagematt
He's a cracking player but is starting to show his age - he can't manage the shear volume of game expected of him at Chelsea. He's world-class still and would do you proud and *IF* he leave Chelsea I'd like to see him in the Prem still. However, to even mention him in the same breath as Tim Sherwood and Steve Stone is a little out of order :-)
andleics
I doubt very much whether there is any genuine substance in the rumour!
merlin
Despite the young talent we have waiting in the wings, we will miss Maka if he does leave, that says a lot about how good a signing he would be for you boys if you got him. Not sure I believe it though I'm afraid. I think if he goes he will go abroad - as andleics said though, would be a shame to lose him from the English game
SpanishBlue
I not sure how true it is, but I like it!

It's the first I've heard of Makelele being linked with us, but of course he would be an absolutely outstanding signing for any top team....even if he is older than Kanu (doubtful!)
Tantona
Yes but in place of whom? Are you all saying have him and not Diarra? Have him and not O'Neil? Pedro? I understand the desire to obtain classy players who will improve the team or squad but if he comes, someone has to either go or miss out on many games. All the other top signings we made were needed but this one seems just an 'extra'. Can't Harry find an aging world class forward or two - now that would be interesting.
Et_tu_Pompeii
according to my french mates Makalele knees are knackered and he is looking for a retirement home... so he's probably on his way then.
russellm
Et_Tu raises a good point, i would rather have Diarra. the other consideration is why do chelsea want to get rid of him? and if he is not playing for them how would he perform with us? he is no spring chicken and i can assure you having been to Chelskis training ground it does not compare to Eastleigh where according to HR and TA is where most of our "senior players" pick up the injuries.
russellm
for me the article should be titled "the blues dont want to pull this off, do they?"
russellm
Et_tu_Pompeii that is a very good point... as great a player as makelele is and i would like to see him here, who would make way for him is my biggest concern - thinking more long term - as we would get a year or 2 maximum wouldn't we, but this could be all we need to get others to then replace him? if i could have fit that i the title section russell i would have :) but we are limited with the letters we can use sadly...
pompeyrug
Et_tu_Pompeii makes a good point...and a bad one. "Can't Harry find an aging world class forward?" - dont we already have one of those - andy cole - and havnt we already seen how hes off the pace, slow, and not a shade on what he used to be like? but on Makelele, no, we dont need him.
pompeycarpet
who needs 'the next makelele' - manuel fernandes - when you can get the genuine thing eh? it is weird seeing the words 'makelele' and 'no we dont need' him in the same sentance isn't it... honestly tho we probably dont need him, but it would be nice...
pompeyrug
Q: Blues cant pull this one off can they? A: No
pompeycarpet
nice and simple response there my homage paying mate :)
pompeyrug
Ceci pourrait être une grande signature mais avons-nous besoin vraiment d'un autre midfielder ? Pourquoi ne regardons-nous pas plus de scorers de but ?
The Rabbi
He's on £70k per week.
Westl
who the Rabbi ?
russellm
is the fella the rabbi is talking about on 70k per week :) something about midfielders and goalscorers being mentioned i think?
pompeyrug
whatever he is he is not worth 70k a week, not you rabbi you are clearly worth more, pompeyrug would gladly sell his house and wife to subsidize your salary, 70k a mere pittance
russellm
I am worth 70k a week believe me.
