Diarra Pompey Bound?

Diarra the World cup French finalist is winging his way to Fratton if Jean-Michel Aulas, the Chairman of Lyon is to be believed.
The French midfielder is admired by Harry Redknapp, but he has always played down his chances of landing the ex-Liverpool player.

Diarra made little impact in his time at Anfield, but will be hoping to prove Premiership critics wrong if a proposed move goes through.

Diarra never actually played a competitive matche for Liverpool, he was loaned back to French clubs Bastia and Le Havre, before finally making a permanent move to Lens for £2 million.

He obviously made enough of an impression on then manager Houllier though, as he later bought him again for Lyon until this seasons subsequent fall-out.

Alain Perrin will probably find it ironic, that his first dabbling in the transfer market with his new club will involve Pompey, but then again he could be the one who throws a spanner in the works!

If there is anything in this one, where would that leave O'Neil, Davis and Hughes?

i see you beat me to this one paultsmouth - was just about to write an article on it... it is looking like we may well get him so i would say that leaves o'neil and/or davis as make weights in the deal that will bring yakubu back to pompey...

Certainly adds weight to those rumours, I know I harp on about it, but the British contingent at Fratton is starting to dwindle

you need to keep a british contingent dont you - and i know we will still have a few, but losing too many is a worry for me too mate... i do think tho that when diarra arrives - as i really think it will now be when and not if, confidence speaking :) - then as much as i would not want to see it o'neil will be gone when yakubu - again i think it is most likely to be when and not if - returns...

Most rumours you can see through when they surface, but Yak and Diarra both look likely arrivals, now can we be greedy and ask for another striker?

yes we can :) and i think we will still need it - so could it be pazzini who slots in as the final peice of the jigsaw...

Although everyone has said that Diarra is a top class player for and in France, but his record at Liverpool wasn't great. I'm sure he has learned a lot over the ensueing period but I can't see him displacing O'neil at the moment as I'm sure he would'nt be sold to Middlesborough. Hughes and Davis, however would have to go to save wages and raise money and save them from the reserves but are any of these fab midfielders we now (or may soon) have tough tackling, play breaker-uppers or do we still need Hughes and Sean? I think we need a spell checker on this site!

Et_tu_Pompeii, i will admit that i do not pay that much attention to my spelling when i comment - but i do with my articles :) hughes would not really be on that much money would he? so i would still like to keep this fella around as he will be happy to play a squad player role, davis not so... True Lysimachus, you can't really turn your nose up at a world cup finalist can you...

To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, 'There's only one thing worse than being talked about . . . and that's NOT being talked about. No problem there for Pompey's new high profile existence. The PEOPLE has reports on transfer roumers in and out: Lyon's Alou Diarra and Watford's Hamuer Bouazza are top of Portsmouth's midfield shopping list. Middlesbrough want midfielders Gary O'Neil and Sean Davis in a swap deal for Portsmouth target Yakubu. Do we need Bouazza? is he a player who could improve in a decent team? Still sorry that GON is being touted as a possible swap deal. And still no link with the newly available Sean Wright Phillips - amazing.

I got a feeling that wether we get another midfielder or not, one of Davis, O'neil or Hughes will go. personaly, I think Davis will be on his way. how about I change my name to pompeyparqueflooring in homage to the great pompeyrug??

pompeyrug - i can change my name if you like...but yes, kind of a homage :) But howmany midfilders is Harry planning on signing? He said he wanted a pacey one, ho can run at playors, who I dont think we have. we have now got 2 defenders, (nearly) 2 midfielders, but still no sign of the two forwards we need.

pompeyparqueflooring has a nice ring to it CharlieChimes, but CharlieChimes is better - we'll save that for someone else to use... a kind of homage to me pompeycarpet is more than fine, i feel honoured :) please do not change it at all... i did like the look of that bouazza fella but i think you are right Et_tu_Pompeii do we need him... i think the general feeling is davis will go - which is a shame but i would certainly rather this than o'neil going, who still may? but hopefully not...

O'Neil and Davis were both mentioned in the papers this morning as a swap + cash for The Yak. Even knowing that that the papers literally Make It Up as they go along the old 'no smoke' saying is worrying me - but, as I would like to see The Yak back it kind of pleases me too. Would Harry sacrifice Gary for Yak? I think he would. Shame. I reckon HR see's the aquisition of a forward (he loves Yakubu) as more important than keeping a good player and an English one (he's not so keen on Gary O) too. So, mixed feelings.

Et_tu_Pompeii - if you download and install the Mozilla Firefox browser and use that instead of that terrible Internet Explorer, you will not only find that the pages load faster but also in free text areas (like the area you write your replies to these articles in), Firefox uses a spell checker that runs the same sort of way that Microsoft Word does as well. Then, people can right click on the highlighted error and make the adjustment, or even add it to the dictionary. It's free and is well worth it.

Would think he would be a good purchase to the team/squad. still need some english fight in the midfield. Not keen to see GON go anywhere.

All this speculation with midfielders suggests to me that Redknapp is planning to offload Davis and possibly O'Neil to Middlesbrough in return for Yakubu. I think selling O'Neil would be unpopular.

As we all keep saying Gary O'Niell and Sean Davis are good footballers, Pompey need more than that. We need a proven goalscorer, and if it takes them to sign Yakubu then that will be a huge decision for the club. If Diarra signs then you would think that the swop would be done, we will have to look at if it was the right decision at the end of the season. However Gary and Sean don't contribute much in goals scored do they ? Pedro, Matty, Nico, Lauren, Sulley and Diarra maybe the way head with Hughsey as cover. Maybe there will be one or two bargains Harry can get, maybe Murphy, Mullins or Etherington as cover or even Smertin or Diop as clubs look to get rid of players and if the Makele rumour is true he would be a great short term buy.

I agree Owenspompey, its imperitive we get a goal scoring forward,& its important that we try not to get to attached to players. We all love Gary O because of his effort level & theirs nothing more rewarding than seeing someone wrok their sox off for our beloved club...but...right now we need a goal scorer more than anything else, loosing Gary would be very much a loss I wouldnt want to see, but if it gets us 20 goals a season, i'm afraid I would see hm leave.

my own thinking Owenspompey is that o'neil - and quite possible even davis - are better than just 'good' footballers tho mate and altho they might not have caused much goal threat last season they did more than enough to be retained - altho one or both will almost certainly go when diarra arrives won't they... if the fact that he is a world cup runner up and french international makes diarra better then he has to arrive - altho davis hasn't been that far away in the past and o'neil might not be that far off either in the future from playing for england... the goals have to come from midfield too but it is primarily the strikers job to do this, so the main threat has to come from them... i have been an admirer of etherington's for quite some time and altho an out and out winger would he improve the left side of midfield - i would say no myself if honest. i would also probably say that murphy, mullins, smertin and diop would not improve the midfield either, i certainly would not see many goals coming from these players...

CharlieChimes, in the respect of getting 20 goals - that would easily see us replicate late season, quite possibly even make europe - in return for o'neil, then it would be hard to say no, i hope there is another option tho. but if not then needs must even over sentiment :( o'neil is one of us tho...

I think that Hughes and Davis are likely to be on their way out. Diarra is considered world class and Bouazza is considered a winger with a bright future. competition and squad is what it is all about as we know from our own season, this article was brought to you ny the BS artist soon to be known as pompeylynoleum
