Pompey tell Kanu 'we won't budge'

Harry Redknapp has told The News that Pompey will not buckle under the 'pressure' Kanu is said to be putting them under in order to get a 2-year contract, as opposed to the 1-year, with the option of a second that is currently on offer.

'I don't know if Kanu will re-sign for us.

'We've offered him a year, with another year on top of that if he plays a certain amount of games.

'That seems like a fair deal to me. It's no different to anybody else. That's how it should be.

'If you don't play the games, then you don't get another deal. If you do, you get another deal.

'When players get into their 30s, they can deteriorate a lot over a two-year period. You've got to be careful.'

All manor of opinions have been shared on this issue and to be quite honest I am getting sick and tired of it - it is quite simple he signs the contract on the table or he goes!

We have told him we will not budge, he has told us he will not budge there seems only one outcome - Kanu will be leaving Pompey at the end of the month.

Bigger and better clubs than Pompey have these age policies - and they seem to work for them, what is more they do not buckle at all. I seem to recall Robert Pires wanting a longer deal than he was being offered at Arsenal, they did not back down he did not either and he went. We have to do the same as if you give into one, you have to give into them all and the club loses the power they should have over players.

If either party back down now they will look stupid, but as well as Kanu played - on the whole - last season and could play again in the next one I would rather he went than we backed down to his demands - as we will look an absolute joke if we now back track and give into him - what he is being offered is fair, take it or leave it Kanu my friend.

PLAY UP POMPEY!

Ok HR. Carry on looking for strikers to replace Kanu, LL, Toddy & Cole. I trust these rumours about Benji being unsettled are b0ll0x otherwise make it 5 new strikers please. Maybe there is a position for Dejan in the team?

Agreed, looks like it has got to the stage where neither party will back down. Personally I don't blame Kanu for wanting to have 2 years in order to be sure about uprooting his family, so good luck finding somewhere to offer him that and I think he'll have no trouble. I wouldn't mind if he stayed - sure, the goals dried up a little but his overall link up and holding the ball up - were a great plus for the team. Benji doesn't score but runs around a lot, Kanu scores a little it but holds it and links play. Either way we need a 20 goal man to partner whichever.

I also hope he finds a contract thaat he & his family are happy with, but its not a Pompey! take it or leave it, im 100% with Harry, I would like him to stay, but if he goes, so be it!
CharlieChimes
I think Harry is spot on with this one and if he moves on then so be it.

Bye bye Kanu - Kanu bye bye!!

As I have said elsewhere, if he a bit more about him he would see it as a challenge and work for that second year.
Et_tu_Pompeii
the fact he wont seems to be more than backing up many people's views that he knows himself that he is not up to the challenge in front of him, so just seems to want to be able to coast on a nice fat 2 year deal - with nothing to worry about...

Since when do we get to go to a yearly review at work and say well boss this year was not that great, but up my salary and extend my contract and I promise I will do better! This is another example of how SOME footballers are so removed from the real world..... I think it is time he either signs or moves on!!!!
Sachas_Brother
i agree sachas, 10 goals only 2 in the last 4 months, simply not good enough,
russellm
good point Sachas_Brother... whilst it is now time for kanu to say he will stay, or to go in light of the recent sky sports reports - covered on vital pompey also - i feel that kanu hasn't been mouthing off as much as the media has led us to believe... whatever happens will happen in the best interests of both parties...
