Pompey linked with Scottish striker

Garry O'Connor's agent, Rudi Vata, has said that the Scottish international striker is looking for a return to the United Kingdom after failing to settle in Russia, but he would like to play in the Premiership - with Pompey, Everton and Fulham reportedly keen.

'People have contacted us and there have been talks but there is nothing concrete at the moment.

'Many clubs would love to have Garry O'Connor but the question mark right now is over the transfer fee. So many clubs can't pay the fee.

'He would love to play in the Premiership for sure. It's the best football league in the world and it would be a fantastic experience for Garry.

'I'm sure if he had the chance to go there, he would.

'Garry is missing his family a lot. His fiancée didn't settle in Russia at all and is pregnant with their second child so she is spending most of the time in Scotland. It's not easy for him but he's doing okay.

'It's been a difficult year for him but it will toughen him up, it will be good experience for him.'

A £1.6million move took O'Connor from Hibs to Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow - you don't get many Scots to the pound playing football in Russia do you! - in February 2006 but with the 24-year old failing to settle in Russia a move back to the UK is something he would like.

The major stumbling block appears to be the £3.4million price tag Lokomotiv have put on the strikers head - who is said to have impressed during Scotland's recent internationals, scoring in both - which is likely to frighten off Pompey as well as the other interested clubs.

Does anyone know much about this fella, would he be worth going for - could there be some truth in this or is it more speculative rumour and nothing more?

Is it me or nearly every player we are linked with its & Everton. I suppose we should be flattered to be in there company or is it they wait for us to start the seach & then they jump on the band wagon?

Storagematt i think it is who the press and agents consider has a need and the right budget bracket. Although if you listen to Harry lately we have no budget and shouldnt be linked with anyone. As for Gary O'Conner Im not sure that being effective against the Faroe islands or Austria makes him the outstanding choice but he wouldnt have to go to the ACoN, but i understand the fee is £4M. I guess a more realistic assesment could be made if Locko Mosco make the last champions league or Uefa, anybody know?
russellm
perhapse if the Benji stories are true then we plan to sell to fund the approach
russellm
£3m let alone £4m sounds alot for this fella - but really i dont know enough anout him to say too much... we do seem to be the 'in' team to link players to, so chances are this is nothing more than just that... i would hope that we would not be selling benjani to raise funds to sign him tho - but do we really need to sell to buy anyway?
pompeyrug
who the *****??? ok, how about a proven prem striker?? dont want to be rude, but is this guy any good?
CharlieChimes
I'm cleaning me boots as we speak having been linked with Pompey in the IOW council newsletter.
Et_tu_Pompeii
Surely Eastwood or Healy or that bloke from Preston would make more sense than this guy. How many scouts have we got in Russia anyway? At least we can all see how good, bad or mediocre players in the Cola leagues are, but this bloke's agent seems to be bigging him up - and who can refute it? Who watches Russian football?
Et_tu_Pompeii
Well, apart from Russians I mean.
Et_tu_Pompeii
you are only just cleaning your boots now Et_tu_Pompeii, i've already got mine packed away in my puma boot bag i had as a nipper ready for the trial i am off for next week! i honestly do not know too much about o'connor so cannot really comment, nor can on russian football... eastwood or healy could be good options - they would not be starters per say but will do a job, would not cost a fortune - maybe - and what is more they are non african, so we would not lose them for a month! the preston fella you are looking for is nugent - i would like him in a pompey shirt for sure but he seems set on a move to everton...
pompeyrug
We've missed big, aggressive and English. It'd be a nice option to have.
