Stefanovic ready to fight

Stefanovic ready to fight

Pompey captain Dejan Stefanovic has told The News he is ready to battle with new signings Hermann Hreidarsson and Sylvain Distin - not forgetting the fellas already here Dejan! - for a place in the team next season.

'We've brought in good players and that is good news. Hopefully there will be more to come.

'I'm here and I'm staying. I don't like change and I have a contract here for another season.

'I went to speak to the manager at the end of the season and he wants me to stay.

'I've always been happy here and nothing has changed.

'When pre-season comes I'll be looking forward to getting back into things.

'I want to be in the first 11 - and stay in the first 11.

'Every season there is a challenge. If you want to achieve things you have to push yourself.

'There is a lot of competition but that is good for the team - and I like a challenge.'

This is the kind of talk you like to hear, it is good for club to have players prepared to battle for places.

Stefanovic has been a good servant to Pompey but I would be lying if I said that I think he should be a regular next season - as personally I think his better days are behind him, I would not be alone in thinking this too I am sure - but he will still be a valuable squad member and will play his part I am sure, when it could have been easier for him to have walked away and joined Milan Mandaric at Leicester.

He also said that 'If I was told it was just as a left back I think I might have found another club. But I can do two jobs and I'm happy to do that.'

My own feelings are that left back would be his most likely position of playing football for Pompey next season - regularly anyway, but to his credit also said he will play there if it is to the benefit of the team because 'I don't just think of myself, I think of the team.'

Dejan has been a great servant for this club in the past, but I feel it's time for him to move on. Many things he did last season left the crowd moaning, and he's either past his best or being shown lacking in the higher quality squad that we have now.

Had his best days with De Zeuwwe. Little chance of 1st team football, in his interest to move on.

I dont think its his time to move at all!!! Stef has the perfect attitude to back up our first 11. Now I know he wants to be int he first 11, but that, with our new signings, just aint gonna be the case!. What I love about the guy is that he NEVER moans about being on the bench. He always wants to prove himself & that is exactly what we need as a backup to keep our team with depth. You wont get the top players bench warming (unless ur chelski!). Chances are if he does get called upon, he will put in a good performance because he will want to prove himself. Plus, their arnt many players on our team who love this city more than him.

Out of all the clubs Stef has been at, he has had more games at Pompey than any other club, that's including Sheff Wednesday. Stay for another season and he would've been at Pompey the longest in his career. That's loyalty to you.

i agree with both sides of this arguement, whilst i do think his best days are behind him - and he did have several games last season to highlight this - i love the attitude he has, so for this reason we should keep him for this one last season at least as we will benefit as CharlieChimes says... it will be interesting to see if he shares these thoughts come january tho if he does not get much of a look-in...

If he's 'happy' on the bench and then filling in for injuries (not a bad crack, really) then he's a great guy to have around.

I think tantona has it right, he's been a good captain but it's time for that coaching course Dej

i think not bad, he was a good captain, apparently has a good way with the players. Has a good work ethic and is tacticaly sound, he is just immobile by todays standards. So i reckon he would be good, i can see him as a player who could go into management.

russell, i think you are very right... do you not think a move to leicester would have been tailormaid for such a thing to have started going in that direction? altho i am still happy to have him here as part of our squad for another year tho...

Good luck Ben!

In an ideal world Davies would have agreed a new deal and stayed with Pompey next season but Grimsby have been able to offer him the stability of a two-year deal we couldn't.

Versatile former Arsenal man in on trial?

Deacon, who started out with Arsenal has been with Stevenage and Crawley with the latter releasing him at the end of last season. Cookie will 'run the rule' over him in pre-season?
