Pompey's defeatist attitude?

Harry Redknapp has told The News that he would like to move for Craig Bellamy - this link seems to have crept up from nowhere - and newly selected French international Jimmy Briand but he cannot compete with others for their signatures?

'Jimmy Briand is very good - he's just been called up for France.

'But again, I won't get him. Rennes don't want to sell him - and there are bigger fish than us trying.

'You look at France, and Nicolas Anelka, who I tried to get here last summer, is centre-forward for his country again now.

'What chance have we got of getting him? With Thierry Henry, he's the best French centre-forward.

'Craig Bellamy would do for us. But West Ham want him and would double his wages to £100,000-a-week. How do you compete with that?

'We've got no chance of getting Bellamy.'

Briand is valued at £8million with Bellamy around the same amount, maybe more? Bellamy is a good footballer, but he is not really a player I would want at Pompey myself.

Maybe I am nave in thinking this but believe it or not 'arry not every player is motivated by money - yep a lot are, but not all - so even though others may offer them more money to play for them it does not mean they will!

If we have the money why do we not test the resolve of the clubs these players play for if we want them - then see where it gets us before we write them off, unless of course Redknapp has already tried and found out?

I agree, it gets on my nerves keep hearing Hal moaning about Not Being Able To Compete with other clubs. Course, I will forgive him if it's just a ploy and he lands a couple of great forwards.

He as always plays the 'under dog' card. Good as Bellemy can be, has serious attitude which would**** off a lot of our team. 100k a week, bull****. There are only so many big clubs out there so sooner or l;ater we may get one. Let's hope so.

Always hated Bellamy but . . . . . . well you never know he might just be the player we need (plus some others of course)

i think most people hate bellamy dont they but he usually does well where goes doesn't he, even if his attitude stinks - he scored a couple of crackers against us the season before last didn't he... let us start competing with these teams instead of saying that we can't before we try eh, but maybe like you say Et_tu_Pompeii it is a part of his ploy - hopefully...

Arry seems to have been making a few negative noises since he missed out on Viduka....sounds like he tried pretty hard to get him and is obviously disappointed.

We will have bid for these plaers if 'arry wants them. All he is now saying is that he tried but is not willing to pay so much money - realistic not defeatist. Also when other clubs learn that Pompey were in for these types of player they will raise their prices when selling to us. 'Arry by aking these negative sounding noises is helping to ensure we don't get bracketed as super-rich and ripped off. P.S I'm glad we're not getting Bellamy, spoiled, cocky little brat with no neck.

I think Harry's 'realistic' attitude is one of the reasons players want to play for us. Sylvan Distin says he didn't know where Man City were going. Sol Campbell was turned off by the politics at Arsenal. The new money helps of course and Harry seems to make the most of it. I don't think proven Premier League players would come to Pompey for the glamour or the history.

I dont think this is anything to worry about. We all now he like to try & keep some signings secret, so im pretty sure he will have other irons in the fire. I think Bellamy is a top class player, but I dont see how Liverpool can ask for double what they paid for him?!?!. I'm still not sure how the hell he can ask for 100k a week! I mean, hes good, but come on!!! With this crazy money, hes not worth persuing. Good call Harry I recon!

Bellamy is a no-no. Too much trouble and at every club he has been at in the past 5 years he has caused trouble with another member of the squad every single season.

i like the debate we are having here as it is a good bunch of comments with valid points and well thought out theories, good to see - great points on sol and distin and the reasoning for players wanting to come here Pompeyscum... yep 'arry will have irons in the fire but the club wont be held to ransom - and rightly so - but sometimes you need to go that little bit further don't you. but we will get the players in he wants eventually this summer, it is still early days isn't it...

Bellamy has been a disruptive influence wherever he's been, but on the field he's one of the finest finishers in the game. If we were able to sign him and Harry was able to control Bellamy's ego and stupidity then we'd be looking to buy our tickets for Europe without a doubt. Quite where the 100k figure comes from that Harry has suggested Wt Spam would pay I've no idea - they didn't want to sign Viduka because of his high salary and that was less than 60k per week.

It has to be said though that Harry is beginning to sound dreadfully boring with his continual moaning of "little" Pompey and I for one am quite sick and tired of it. I am full of admiration for Harry and what he has done and I for one hope he stays for many more years yet. But please Harry, just shut up for once will you?

if we were able to offer Euro football, we would have the additional budget but would not have to offer the money other non Euro clubs will. Perhapse now people can see why it wasnt a "brilliant season" just a good one, which means we will have to compete. You might recall Ruggers a year or two back i made an analogy that even when Harry had the money to go to LDP ( yep im that old), he would still feel more at home at the 1 shop.

being a bit cynical, with respect we will get the down to the bare bones speach no matter how good things are, just so we know how much we have to be gratefull. I think he was a bit dissapointed at not getting Viduka and the Norweigen youngster so he's feeling down Harry does need sympathy and to be loved. Gawd bless ya guvnor.......

I suppose he feels that any manager, like those at Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United can buy expensive good payers, hell, even the average Champ Man addict can put a team together with enough dosh, but it takes skill and knowledge and man-management to assemble a team on a shoestring. I can see his point - if that is indeed it.

Go for it Harry, think big and get the striker we desire, lets show everyone that las years aquisitions were the start. Nugent,Yak or Defoe, be brave and get in, we are right behind you and want the club to push on, and as Harry says we need the 20 goal striker to get us there.
