'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Pompey Chimes (7)

Saturday saw The Sun claim that Pompey dropped their interest in Lyn Oslo striker Chinedu Ogbuke because the 20-year old has been refused a work permit - this came 24 hours after Pompey opted out of following up their reported £1.7million bid for Kenyan international McDonald Mariga, due to similar work permit issues.

Also in The Sun Kanu again expressed his desire to move on if he does not get his 2-year deal that he wants - this was covered in full on Vital Pompey in this article Kanu ready to walk.

The thing that really caught my eye though was the news that Calcio Catania and Peruvian international winger Juan Manuel Vargas, who trained with Pompey last summer and looked odds on for a move to the club - but this stalled over what appeared to be unrealistic demands from his agent among other things - is being linked with moves to Roma, Juventus or even Liverpool, oh and of course Pompey again!

It was on Nolberto Solano's recommendation that Pompey first looked at Vargas but a deal never came about because of one thing or another and he eventually signed a 4-year deal with Catania. His apparent impressive form last season and the chance of doubling the money on their investment just 12 months earlier could tempt Catania to sell.

If this does happen then all the talk that Vargas and his agent gave last summer could in actual fact have more backbone to it than it might have appeared - so it could be the case of another star slipping through the Pompey net? Oh well, I am sure we will get over it.

At some point Pompey must bite its tongue and buy someone who costs more than they want to pay, wants better personal terms than it wants to pay and is a bit of a risk. That's what other teams do. Some you win, some you lose but it would be nice to win once.

The trouble now is there a few more prem team with serious monies & they know they have to over the odds to buy the best but it's worth it to successful.

true fellas, for the sake of a bit of 'pride swalling' - and maybe a few extra thousand a year - sometimes we will have to give alittle more than we want... all too often in the past deals seemed to have collapsed over 'minor' issues. agreed some you win some you lose, but we need to start winning some and if we do it is more than likely it will be a winner on the pitch also...

we quite frequently buy cheap and still lose, we also have had some good players that Storrie has P1ssed off so much that they have left. But we have to speculate to accumulate, some pundits have noticed that harry's wheeler dealing has involved a lot of buying, a lot of giving away but not much selling, this is not good for a transfer budget.
