Redknapp wants 35 goal partnership!

Redknapp wants 35 goal partnership!

Speaking in The News Harry Redknapp has revealed that he wants a strike partnership capable of supplying Pompey with 35 goals next season!

'If you don't score goals you don't win. That's why they are so valuable.

'We had Kanu weigh in with 12 goals last season and he was great.

'But I would like to have two strikers who will give me 35 goals.

'To have two frontmen weigh in with that between them would make the difference, but where are they?'

If Pompey can have a strike force that potent next season then we will easily consolidate - at the very least - our position last season, more than likely improve, quite possibly to the extent of Uefa cup football.

Thus far Redknapp's attempts have been thwarted by asking prices being too high - with this apparently the reason why Yakubu will not be coming back to Pompey from Boro, players opting for other clubs - as has happened with Mark Viduka or potential targets not being prolific enough - Henri Camara and a proposed £3million move from Wigan and French based players touted for moves to Fratton for example.

I am not sure that any of our current strikers are capable of 10 goals let alone 15 so it will either need two brand new strikers, but finding two - reasonably priced - capable of 15-20 goals each will be almost impossible, or one that can score at least 25 goals - and players of the quality and standard do not come cheap! One thing that is almost certain is we would need to again break our transfer record once, maybe twice to achieve this.

Redknapp asks where are these strikers that can score the goals?

I ask you the same thing, realistically - in terms of them wanting to come here and us not being held at ransom, who could Pompey get that may give us such a potent goal return?

how likely it is he would come i am not sure and i do not know how true that rumour was that anelka was spotted at fratton - i am not holding my breath tho - but if it is then we have a 15min-25max goal man right there - anelka and benjani could be some partnership… his price tho? I would expect around the £10m mark, would this be considered too much? personally i would say it is about right, but more to the point, what we would have to pay...

Anelka's a good goalscorer, but the likelihood is that he would only stick around for one season before getting cold feet....personally I'd want a player with a bit more loyalty. Could take a punt on Alan Smith if his contract isn't renewed, although I suspect he might want to stay 'Up North'. Gone a bit quiet on the Defoe front too. Harewood could do a good job for us and wouldn't cost as much as others. OR for a gamble on a lower leagues striker, what about Billy Sharp from S ****horpe!
08/06/2007 09:50:00
The three strikers we tracked and lost last season were all 20+ goals per season merchants and most of them gave evidence of that during 2006/2007. I think either Hal has to pull something unusual out of the bag or we have to be lucky with a cola player or we pay-up and look big. For all his alleged faults, Jermain Defoe could be a star for us and with Toppenham still bidding like crazy, you never know . . .

Sorry Tantona, our bits crossed - similar thoughts, though

defoe is a player that i have said i feel will sign for us this summer - yep things have gone quiet but that means nothing. if spurs gets bent then defoe will be off,so why not here? a lower league striker could very well be worth a gamble so why not...
08/06/2007 11:53:00
True PR, if they get Bent then Defoe could well end up fourth choice for them and he'll no doubt be after regular starts (even if coming to us would take him out of the England picture - you know what Mclaren's like).

the spineless steve debate will be opened up again shortly i think mate with an article i will be adding... we have to look at the anelka and defoe situations like this - teams like arsenal, liverpool, united and chelsea are not too likely to move for these players are they? they are good enough but they wont play will they? spurs will almost certainly sign bent - another that will not sign for one of these four you wouldn't have thought - so defoe will be off. pompey have the advantage over other teams for defoe because of 'arry, arguably the advantage over others for anelka because we are on the up and should build on last season, others are looking to start something after their form last season...

Oops, my comment got lost! Here it is again, which will explain why Pompeyrug mentioned Steve McClown.... let me see... I don't want to offend anyone here but if Harry wants a 35 goal partnership then he has to find someone who can score at least 30 of those alone as Kanu would take over three seasons to achieve that, which is what it has taken him so far.

I don't think we'll ever see the likes of Defoe here, he still has an outside chance of an England call up and with that ginger headed maggot McClown in charge, nobody who comes to Pompey will ever get a call up. the guy is a complete pratt, even if Beckham came here he'd not pick him just because we're Pompey. Get rid of the scum, vermin like him should not even have a job in football.

Rant over - for now.

Et_tu_Pompeii - I wouldn't go shouting too loudly about what you and Tantona get up to at night, some people may not like the idea of the pair of you getting your bits crossed! ;)

but are england the draw they once were TPB? obviously everyone wants to play for their country but do players have as much pride to so - on the whole - these days? with this thought also in mind this only makes me think that we could get defoe here even more so... even so, the fact that defoe is younger should never see him come out of the england reckoning anyway - even if he plays for pompey, should it?

Further to the Defoe and Anelka debate, how many of you out there feel that we may well be the team of the moment, along with Reading that is who will be pushing even harder next season? I can see Bolton really coming a cropper now, I also feel Reading will not find it quite so easy next season either, whereas we've had our apprenticeship and have come through it quite well - Wigan nearly failed despite having a good first season, Sheffield were unlucky after the Tevez situation and Watford never were going to make the grade.

Man City are a club in freefall, Fulham may well be fighting to stay out of the bottom three, West Ham however may be a stronger bet now as will Newcastle be.

Our problem was without doubt the inability of our forwards to score goals, had it not been for our midfield then we may well have been a lot further down the table.

I still think we should tap up Preston North End for a certain striker, he'd do it for us.
