Pompey Chimes (1)

Pompey Chimes (1)

The weekends tabloids delivered some 'entertaining' snippets to me, some more so than others, the majority not even good enough to use to wipe my backside - obviously given a choice I prefer not to use the coarseness of newspaper anyway - but a couple caused me genuine interest.

Some papers may have their knockers - quite literally some more than others, but a few bits over the weekend appealed to me for varying reasons 1) Fowler and a proposed move to Rangers and 2) further Pompey interest in Defoe - apparently.

1) Fowler - released by Liverpool at the end of the season is looking like he will move to Rangers on a mere 20 grand a week. We have been linked but have not made an offer, but I maintain that Fowler could do a job for us - but this would only be a short term fix. Pompey could easily match and improve on Rangers' offer but money does not seem to be the motivating factor here, the lure of champions league football and the much easier chance of silverware in Scotland seems to appeal more to the player in the twilight of his career.

2) More interesting Defoe - Music to my ears, hearing Defoe linked is nothing new but the £5million the news of the world suggests was quite simply laughable - and that is putting it politely! Double that amount and maybe some and we would have the amount needed to test Spurs' resolve. It would then come down to the draw of Pompey and maybe more importantly Harry Redknapp - the man who gave Defoe his break at West Ham. I still feel we could see Defoe in a Pompey shirt next season so do not expect this rumour to go away.

There will inevitably be link after link after link after endless link over the summer months - some with more clout others, either way the 'Pompey in the tabloids' series will grow.

Defoe link seems inevitable what with Redknapp and Defoe being West Ham people. Almost prefer a free Viduka.

true... the one concern i would have about getting defoe would be the inevitability that we would find it hard to hold onto him when he scored the goals he would... i would still rather take him for £12m than viduka on a free tho - would obviously take viduka if we could get him tho... between fowler and viduka tho i would take fowler any day of the week...

Fowler above Viduka... Am I alone in thinking Fowler has not been a top quality player for several years now? He's scored 8 goals in the past two seasons, I think Dukes grabbed 19 last season. I'd also argue that Viduka has a more 'all-round game' in terms of strength and link-up play. I'd also disagree about the newspaper - it is not the coarseness that makes it undesirable, more the shiny ink gives it a non-absorbant quality - think of the tracing paper at primary school.

Viduka has richer experience than Fowler in the standards of some of the players at Portsmouth. Krancjar, Lauren, Kanu and the like have played in European competitions whilst Fowler has stayed in England all his life, only defenders and goalkeepers can be decent with solitude experience like that.

given a run in the team - pompey or otherwise - over a period of time and fowler would score... we have benjani that will run until his shirt is stretched 3 sizes bigger from the sweat but need that goalscorer - viduka can score and will bring others into play but we are after an out and out goalscorer and viduka is not that... all players linked with pompey, viduka, fowler, hyypia, muntari, defoe and distin - all used in the last poll - would improve us, distin has and muntari will, so i would still take anyone from the 3 forwards, top choice would be defoe - fowler and/or viduka next but would not grumble at getting any of them...

Yep its been the DUKA for me for some while now, ever since somebody told me to compare him to kanu. Also it seems Defoe is regarded as Lazy by most spurs fans. The muntari thing seems a bit odd, having just got back from frog side L'equippe TV says that like last season Udine are getting fed up with Pompey's prevaricating. Time for SG to over ride some jackastorrie me thinks.
