Distin eyes European push

Distin eyes European push

Speaking for the first time after completing his free transfer move to Pompey on Wednesday afternoon, Sylvain Distin told the Pompey website that he signed for Pompey because he would like to help us push on for European football.

'My ambition is to push for Europe, that is why I am here,' he stated confidently. 'I don't know whether we will succeed or not but we will definitely try.

'I have been in touch with Portsmouth for a long time. The side did well last season and they are going in the right direction. Harry Redknapp was also a big influence in me coming here.

'It was tough to leave Man City, I was there for five years and I've got friends and family over there but I felt the time was right to leave. I didn't speak to (former team-mate) David James about coming here; I don't like to talk to anyone because it is my decision. Once I made the decision to come here, that was it - it was final.

'There were other clubs interested, when you are available on a free transfer everyone enquires about you but you soon learn who really wants you.'

We really missed a trick by not making it into next seasons Uefa Cup - but we do not look back with regret, as it was a fine season. But we will have to go some to make it via the league next season but more signings like Distin - in particular at least one 20 goal a season striker, add this to Sulley Muntari's pending arrival and our squad is looking as though it could seriously compete for such a place.

'arry is saying that we fended off Liverpool interest, so if true it shows belief players have in our potential. Distin is after European football, by signing for Liverpool he would have had champions league football wouldn't he... Again this shows players may be starting to believe - as most of us do that we mean business...

I still think finishing in the top 10 is a massive achivement for us. Let's not take it for granted on the back of one season. Whilst Harry can wheel & deal we have a chance of another great season, but let's not go to overboard.

If we can bring in Munatri, Viduka and a couple of others then we will definitely have improved the squad which is what is needed for next season to maintain the current momentum.

I've just been talking to a contact of mine in Liverpool, he's just got back from the match last night and said so many there were gutted at not getting Sylvain. they were also saying that they think we are going to be a serious challenge for a top six spot next season, especially with Sulley on his way. So who knows, maybe they could be right? The only point to remember though is that Liverpool have only beaten us three times in twelve matches so far since 2003, so they can hardly consider themselves a yard stick to measure us against!

Play the highest of pompey TPB, id like to say im excited about Muntari coming...so i wil.... I'M EXCITED ABOUT MUNTARI COMING... Viduka would be good and probably more likely than defoe but so far all good signs... and we are not fretting over defensive support like last season

Good signing although I'm not certain about his leather jacket. bring on Muntari. I bet he's got even worse dress sense.

Fantastic Signing. The reason we lost so many games last season was the gaps in defence. Silly goals. I don't think that will be the case this year.

Viduka wore a combination of a denin jacket and flares. Let's barrage the door when he comes along (jk, hope we get him).
