Would Titus Bramble be so bad?

Pompey have confirmed the arrival of Sylvain Distin from Man City, which has left us looking very strong in a central defensive area. We are going to add even more to this area with Titus Bramble set to follow him through the gates of Fratton by the end of the week - would his signing really be so bad?

I am not a fan of Bramble's by any means, just hearing the name 'Titus Bramble' makes me shudder but he is a player of undoubted potential - or so they have been telling us for the last 5 years or so, so maybe we should not be so quick to scoff at this highly probable move.

In all fairness to Bramble he has never really played alongside defenders with that much quality really has he? The Newcastle defence has been rocky at best for a good few years now and although Bramble has been the culprit more than once, training, let along playing alongside players the likes of Sol Campbell, Linvoy Primus and Sylvain Distin not to mention working with Harry Redknapp and one of this countries greatest ever central defenders in Tony Adams could maybe yet see the 'quality central defender' we have been told about for years still shine through?

Our central defensive area is starting to look rock solid now and the options of Bramble and Distin as cover for, what I feel is still the best pairing we have in Campbell and Primus feels me with far greater optimism than it ever did Andy O'Brien, Noe Pamarot, Dejan Stefanovic and Djimi Traore having to come in.

If we can bring in a striker, maybe two who will get us 20 goals a season we will be laughing wont we. I still have this sneaky feeling we will be hearing a lot more about Jermain Defoe and Portsmouth Football Club over the summer.

PLAY UP POMPEY!

I hope that Distin and Bramble are not being added to cover for Sol's departure, if they are i will not be as confident as i was when i wrote this... Having all four will leave us looking really good in the middle of defence... Viduka and/or Fowler would be good for me but I think if we offer the right money we could see Defoe in a Pompey shirt next season - even more so if Bent goes to Spurs...

Nope! still no convinced about Shamble (see what I did there?). I have watched him so many times & thought hes just not good enough to be in the prem. Would rather give him a miss!

As a Newcastle fan the Campbell stories up here are getting stronger and stronger every day. Bramble isn't an adequate replacement for anyone UNLESS he's playing alongside Sol.
SirLes
Sol has bought a new property in Hampshire, and says his friend base is in London so would prefer to stay on South Coast. Therefore as this looks like Bramble + Sol, not Bramble in place of Sol... Then i feel confident the pairing would be a good one. No disrespect to Newcastle, but Bramble looked worse than he actually is as he has No other Key Players to work alongside.

Shambles on Tyneside became a lardy, error prone playboy and the fans turned on him. Sure he can look terrible for the most part but, for sure (twitch twitch), his undoubted potential can be drawn out by the combination of a fresh start, HR and TA. Linvoy or Sol would frown on any unsuitable off-field activities and would help bring him on. I'd be pleased to get him on board with Distin and Sol and Linvoy. Without these experienced players as first choice for the meantime I'd hate to throw Shambles str8 into the team but with their help he can come to prove himself, hopefully. I'm still sure big Sol will stay, even more with the team being built round him and these exciting new players there to learn from him.

I just wonder if Bramble was one of those players that got their Big Break too soon. He looked a great prospect at Ipswich and was very highly rated. Sometimes players who get "Dream" moves get them too early in their careers, Crouch for instance didn't exactly set the football world alight after he left us. As happened with Crouch sometimes a further move can take the pressure off them and they get back on track, well thats my theory fingers crossed that if he is coming it will work for him too.
Steve C
LMAO, that headline is golden!
BomBom
well if you can believe what the News are making up today not only will be signing Bramble but The Herminator as well.
Steve C
oh and Sol has pledged to stay as well.
Steve C
I can't believe you lot are questioning Bramble's suckyness.

I would rather have Stephanovic as cover for the middle with a left back a priority. When Glen Johnson has played well we have always looked a more dangerous/unpredictable team going forward. Stephanovic and Traore don't provide that sort of play

It can not all be down to the toon alone but the defence they have hasn't exactly helped Bramble but if he adds further strength to our central defensive options I'll be happy with that. He will learn from some of the best defenders he has ever played with and will be likely to play with... 'arry loves the Herminator doesn't he, seems to have been after him for years - not so sure myself though... I can not see Stefanovic staying I feel Milan will have him at Leicester next season...

Let's just look at something here ... Bramble was an extremely powerful player with bags of potential. Sadly, he had a manager who should not be allowed to run a bath let alone a Premiership side.

Roeder took over Harry at West Ham and nearly got them relegated - he still had the same players that Harry had when he left, with West Ham finishing the season in 7th place, just missing out on Europe. Roeder has not missed every possible opportunity to take a side swipe at Harry and all this does is to serve how pathetic the man is, which brings me nicely round to the issue of Bramble's Shambles.

When Bramble went to Toon, it was an inspirational signing and one that had a superb future for Newcastle and also for Bramble. But due to the incompetence and extremely poor man management skills (or lack of) of Roeder, many players - including Bramble - started to play well below their ability. Let's get one thing straight right now; Harry Redknapp and Sam Allardyce are probably the two best man managers in the Premiership. It will be difficult to find anyone else who can bring the best out of a player who is low on confidence, so we would do well to sign Bramble and prevent Sam from honing the defender back into the sort of player that everyone will want.

Harry will not sign anyone that is such a liability unless he is confident that he can turn the player around and if anyone can then Harry certainly will. I am no different than anyone else, I too have concerns if Bramble can manage to lift his game but Harry has not let us down with players before (Ivica Mornar being maybe one exception!) and I am not about to doubt the man now.

With Brambles, we will have cover across the back quite admirably; Primus can play at RB or in the middle, Sol on the other hand can only play centre - so if he is injured, as he was towrds the end of the season, then we need Pamarot (who has really come on under Harry since rejoining us) and Bramble to give us the additional cover needed. Pamarot to his credit can also play LB, which he did well too a couple of time this season.

So as far as I'm concerned, get yourself down here Titus, if you want to go places then Pompey is the place to be! One final point - welcome to Pompey Sylvain!!
TruePompeyBlue
I love it TPB, you make fair and valid points. we have doubts but Bramble is a better player than the one we have seen all too often isn't he...
pompeyrug
bramble can look a lummox at times, but he is a big lump to get past, with campbell and now distin in the side it can only help his progress
paultsmouth
now Normally TPB and i are on the same erratic wave length but i fear not this time...... In short ARE YOU F#*^ING MAD ??????? .... The bag pipes bought him on the strength of a 5 game run of reasonable performances and a load of hype. We need players who can hit the ground running and show a bit of class, like lauren and apaprt from the odd clanger Dystin. We all know Harry does buy failures and we could rattle of 6 or 7 names, take a look at the Bramble clips on You Tube for a flavour of the man. Also he has an attitude problem when not picked, can we afford that if SteveC is to get that next step. Nope Titus Bumble's suckyness is not in dispute. As for Pamarot, he has put in three good performances but he made every newspaper and most TV pundits nightmare team.
russellm
Now now Russell, everybody knows I wear a top hat with a price stag still attached and hold tea parties with rabbits, so let's not mock the afflicted. Heh, heh, heh!!

Nope, I actually think this could be something good that many will miss until they witness the change themselves. But if he does sign and if he does end up being a huge flop, I'll clean the steps of Guildhall with a toothbrush at the end of the season if you wish - you can even get on to the News and quote me on that if you like. I think bramble would make a great player at Pompey. He needs HR's guidance to bring the best out of him. I just hope Linvoy gets enough games next season.
POMPEYMEV
I still think that optimus primus and sol would be the best pairing we have but like you POMPEYMEV i would about primus getting enough games... if there was a better defender last season - certainly english, in the premiership i did not see him...
