Pompey sign Sylvain Distin

Pompey sign Sylvain Distin

Sylvain Distin become our first signing of the summer this afternoon as he was unveiled as a free transfer arrival, signing a 3 year contract with the club. The 29 year old joins his former City team mates David James and Andrew Cole, who have also signed for Pompey from City in the past 12 months.

Harry Redknapp has long since been an admirer of Distin's, and along with other managers first made moves for him last summer. Since then it had looked very likely that the Frenchman's time with City was running out - and so it has proved. Former City boss Stuart Pearce even removed the captain's armband from Distin, handing it to Richard Dunne due to his reluctance to sign a new deal.

Distin confirmed his departure from City earlier this week and since then has been heavily linked with Pompey, with it now confirmed he is a Pompey player - with us reported to have fought off a lot of interest to sign the experienced central defender.

It was also hoped that confirmation of the Sulley Muntari deal would be revealed today at the press conference but this has been delayed until later in the week - but this is only due to lose ends being tied up, it is not a cause for concern. Titus Bramble is also expected to be a Pompey player by Sunday.

Good quality signing and gives us far greater strength in depth as i always shuddered at the thought of Pamarot, Traore, O'Brien and even Stefanovic stepping in... Sol, Primus, Distin and Bramble - when he signs later in the week - will see us looking superbly strong in central defence...

Great signing, must keep Sol too. Not sure about Wilf (Bramble) has a lot to prove.

Top player, will provide us with a great deal more strength at the back along with Sol and Linvoy. Our defence is looking a lot better now, though I'd sooner see Stef moving say to Leicester - perhaps he could take Treore with him?

Pamarot will then be the weakest of the remainder but he has looked comfortable and had improved as time went on, confirming that Harry is the man to get the best out of anyone - which is why I am beginning to feel Bramble will actually prove to be an excellent acquisition, after all he was an extremely good defender until that suit full of bugger all Glenn Roeder got his hands on him. Roeder could not resist taking pot shots at Harry and now if proof be needed, the Master is still in work whilst the Pretender is out of work - serves you right Roeder, now get a job you can be good at, like stacking shelves for TK Maxx!

Going back to our defence though, let's take a look at who we've got on our books, with exception to AOB, Stef and Treore: Linvoy
So we will need another for cover and of course a decent left back, always supposing Treore isn't considered. It's looking good people, now what we really need is a damned good forward - please Harry, don't rely on Kanu and Benjani, we need a proven goalscorer. the formula is simple - if we score more than the other side, we win! There is no point in having a very strong defence if we cannot put the ball in the net and it will not be fair at all to rely on Kanu - so get a good forward, even Viduka would be a good option.

I have just read your comment TPB and we seem to be having the same kind of feeling on Bramble, so long as we keep Sol I think he could turn out to be a really good free signing, Distin will certainly be that... I like Kanu - as you know, but we need that 20 man goalscorer and none of our forwards are that are they. If Viduka and/or Fowler arrived i would thank Kanu for what he did but would sooner have Benjani playing alongside the goalscorer and think we could even see goals from him as a result... I am still thinking Defoe will sign though...

I hope Defoe signs, with the great defence we have now, & an already pretty good midfield (boosted by Muntari) all we need is someone like Defoe & we realy do have a good squad in my opinion. Even more exciting times ahead!

Distin is a great move by you lot. Would have been happy to have him at SJP. Still, at least we get Sol ;-0
23/05/2007 14:01:00
Ah Sirles, we are monopolising on class defenders! Big Sol has just bought a house in Hampshire and has said he is going nowhere, good luck elsewhere!
23/05/2007 22:01:00
SirLes there is this defender called Titus Bramble available... what do you mean you know as he has just been released by the toon anyway? I would be pretty let down if Sol left for newcastle to be honest...
23/05/2007 22:51:00
Hope BRAMBLE doesn't prove to be a THORN in our side.

Just got back from working visit to France and Italy and the Muntari deal is considered an excellent move for the player and the club. i think he will be good, he is strong and will provide a bit of grit to our mid field. As for the witless Bumble i agree with Storagematt, with his attitude issues Bumble has as much to prove on the training ground as on the pitch. As for Distin, well he has made gaffes against us which have led to goals but he is a welcome addition. I am off to Toulouse this evening (who i believe finished 7th in le Championat) and i am advised by a mate that we are being linked to a young striker they have, but then again we have been linked to a player in every other city i have visited in the last week.

Big Ben returns!

There's no doubting how important Davies is to us, we most definitely missed the former Sheffield United man against Orient but Cook's confirmed he'll start against Bristol Rovers.
