Five goal thriller win deserved

Five goal thriller win deserved

Pompey recorded a first win in four League One games when coming away from Blackpool, in a game that saw four goals in the final quarter of an hour, with a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Following a goalless first half, shortly after Blackpool almost went ahead, fortune favoured Pompey when Jamal Lowe saw his deflected effort kept out by Ryan Allsop but the former Blues loanee goalkeepers efforts only saw the ball drop to Brett Pitman to score into an empty net.

Viv Solomon-Otabor drew Blackpool level but on 80 minutes Ben Close looked to have won it when he followed up another Allsop save, having kept out Pitman, to restore Pompey lead.

However, a couple of minutes later Blackpool were level again when Oli Hawkins scored his latest goal for Pompey, unfortunately this was an own goal... not to be denied the Blues scored a late winner when an unmarked Pitman scored from close range.

The attacking play pleased Kenny Jackett, who was quoted by the News post-match, with the 'heart and character' bringing a deserved win to end a 'good week,' which also saw a Checkatrade Trophy win at Charlton.

'The game opened up in the second half and we did well going forward. I thought we showed a lot of heart and character to come back from being pegged back twice and got a deserved winner in the end,' said Jackett.

Adding: 'This is a difficult place to come and get a win so we can be happy with what we've achieved. It's been a good week after the win at Charlton on Tuesday.'

Defensively the boss felt we could have done better but a great travelling support, as always, was rewarded with a win to delight him.

Jackett added: 'We could have dealt with their goals better which came from two crosses into the box but we've been able to battle back and we are delighted to send our fans home happy. They were here in great numbers again and were fantastic.'

Has Jackett seen the light, I certainly hope so! we looked like a team who knew what they were about instead of a team of strangers. Naismith must stay in the side in place of Kennedy who is far to predictable, Rose is a better player than o'keefe he's far more solid in midfield, and Evans is more mobile, quicker than Thompson and gives us better options in attack. Will he drop them next week I would't back against it!. It will be interesting to see how his favorites react to being out of the side.

Thank God for that, puts us 8 clear of relegation, but why has it taken Jackett so long to realise that the players that can win us games especially tough northern away games, need to be on the pitch and not sat on the bench or left out of the squad while we toil in vain for a defeat like we've done too many times this season. Hopefully he'll accept that his previous selections simply weren't working and yesterday was a clear sign of what can be achieved. We'd have lost 2 or 3 nil if he'd continued with his previous set up. We just need to keep that relegation zone firmly at arms length.

Fine, for a temporary option

Such is his ability Jackett decided to switch Clarke to the problematic left back spot against Blackpool - this isn't a permanent solution for the former Ipswich man though.
