A hard earned, but deserved, win at Wimbledon

A hard earned, but deserved, win at Wimbledon

Pompey, which is something Kenny Jackett felt was deserved, having worked hard to achieve it, recorded a first win since the opening day - against Rochdale - at Wimbledon on Saturday.

A goal in each half was enough for the Blues to triumph 2-0 at Kingsmeadow.

When experienced pair Brett Pitman and Barry Fuller went head to head the challenge from the Wimbledon captain on the Pompey one saw a penalty awarded - Pitman himself stepped up and made no mistake to put us ahead on 38 minutes.

Defensive uncertainty allowed Conor Chaplin to again make an impact from the bench as the Blues forward, minutes after his arrival, made the most of Anthony Hartigan's error to beat Dons goalkeeper George Long and wrap up an overdue win.

I wouldn't quite say we had been 'desperate' for a win but points from the games against Wimbledon and Northampton - coming up on Tuesday - were needed so this is a good start to the quick fire double header.

Jackett, commenting immediately after the game, quoted by the News, was in little doubt victory was deserved.

He said: 'It was hard earned and I felt, in the end, we deserved the victory. We started slightly nervous and some of our passing options weren't great.'

Adding: 'But it was a battle and it was a very good clean sheet for us. As the game grew, we played better and better and by the end deserved the victory.'

Yes, hard earned and the added positive of a clean sheet too, but now we could do with building on this and gaining a little forward moving momentum, which was something we came into League One with of course.
