Playing to Lowe's strengths

Playing to Lowe's strengths

Jamal Lowe put in another impressive performance for Pompey on Tuesday.

Lowe looked good when he came on against Rochdale to kick off the League One season but his sending off resulted in a three-match ban - this suspension didn't apply to the Checkatrade Trophy.

He took his chance when again showing what a lethal finisher he is.

When he 'drifted inside' Kenny Jackett didn't think he gave Fulham's U21 side too many problems and the Pompey boss, of course semi-joking, said he would have fancied his own chances against him.

Jackett told portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'I was pleased with Jamal. You need to get him out wide because he's drifted inside in the past - and I'd be happy playing against him then!'

However, if he can remain 'high and wide' Jackett, looking to play to Lowe's strengths, feels the forward could trouble any left back in League One on his day.

'If he can stay high and wide then he's a big threat and any left-back in our division would find him tough to handle. He's not been long out of non-league and we have to make sure that we play to his strengths. He can score goals and he can make them.'

Yes, I think we can safely say Lowe's best position is on the wing, running at players creating chances for himself and others as well as getting into dangerous goalscoring positions - as he has shown - when the ball in coming down the left hand side.

Commenting himself, Lowe told portsmouthfc.co.uk he would have been happier had Pompey won but he feels the Blues will learn from their mistakes from the Fratton Park defeat on Tuesday.

'I wouldn't say I was satisfied because I'd rather we'd won the game than I score two goals. There were a couple of errors and we should have seen it out, but that's something I'm sure we'll learn from.'

Lowe, who didn't think he would be eligible to play as he was under the impression his suspension would count in this competition, was glad he could and is still ruing his Rochdale sending off.

He'll sit out his final game against Walsall on Saturday but Lowe's then hopeful of forcing himself back into contention for the meeting with Paul Cook's - of course the man who signed him - Wigan.

Lowe said: 'I didn't think I was going to be eligible to play, but it was great to break up the suspension a little bit. It was a nice bit of skill from Curtis Main for my first goal and then Gareth Evans did well for my second one.'

When reflecting on his sending off Lowe admitted it had been 'a bit of a forward's tackle' but there wasn't anything malicious about it.

He finished: 'I was trying to get to the ball first and their player just managed to nick it away. I was a bit unfortunate really. It was a red card to be fair, but it would have been nice if the referee had just shown me a yellow and given me a slap on the wrist. I'll be supporting the boys on Saturday and then we'll see what happens at Wigan after a good week of training.'
