A chance to impress

A chance to impress

Wholesale changes aren't going to be possible as such against Fulham in the Checkatrade Trophy.

However, Kenny Jackett's going to make some changes at Fratton Park this evening.

Unless Pompey want to be hit with a fine, something we've become accustomed too in this competition, Jackett can only make so many changes to the side who faced Oxford - chances will be offered though with it down to those coming to take them.

He told 'There are certain rules in place, but we will be making a few changes, so I can look at some of the players who haven't had a chance yet. The lads who have been substitutes will get an opportunity to stake their claim for a first team place. The purpose of the higher-level clubs entering the competition is so their young players have experience of taking part against older pros.'

Adding: 'Fulham have a very good youth policy with plenty of talented youngsters and so it should be an interesting fixture for us. We'll respect them as our opponents, but it's a chance for me to look at a few different combinations and see where certain people are.'

Conor Chaplin's looking to get back to his best form this season and Jackett's already been impressed by him, whereas Adam May's featured in the last couple and has been seen as a positive, one of the biggest ones from a disappointing afternoon at Oxford on Saturday.

'Conor Chaplin's been much talked about here, but Adam May hasn't done his chances any harm at all. He was a big positive at Oxford, showing a really good range of passing - I think he has a bright future.'

Developing younger players, which is meant to be the purpose of competitions such as the Checkatrade Trophy, is what Jackett wants to do.

He said: 'Jack Whatmough and Brandon Haunstrup have come in and done good jobs, while there are more behind them. Pompey had to go up last season, but it was an older team and now we have to develop a younger one. There's a lot of promise for us going forward.'

Worthy of a new deal?

So, Danny Rose, as we know, isn't going to play again this season. As things stand this would mean he'll not pull on a Pompey shirt again as his contract expires in the summer.

Sickening Rotherham winner

Losing on Saturday was bad enough, the fact this was an added time winner more so. The cherry on the cake was the fact Rotherham's goal came from ex-Pompey full back Joe Mattock.
