Robbo released

Robbo released

Gary Roberts' Pompey career is officially over after his exit by mutual consent.

Having been informed, along with Michael Smith, he wasn't in Kenny Jackett's future plans, Roberts initially insisted he wanted to remain at Fratton Park and wouldn't leave.

Roberts has been training with Smith away from the first team squad recently, working with a fitness coach, whilst Pompey awaited interest, well, concrete interest, ahead of an anticipated exit before the transfer window closed.

A fee isn't going to be received by Pompey but the Blues, assuming he didn't need paying off, will save his wages for the final year of his deal after it was confirmed on portsmouthfc.co.uk a mutual agreement saw Roberts, 33, move on.

Chief executive Mark Catlin said: 'I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to Gary - both on a personal level and on behalf of everyone at the club. I hope that he will forever be remembered for what he achieved at Pompey, especially last season when we went on that fantastic run to win the title. His contribution over the past two years has been invaluable - he has been a fantastic player for this club. We all wish him every success for the future.'

Fair play to Roberts for moving on, he could have quite easily dug in his heels and seen out the final year of his deal but Robbo, quite clearly, wants to play football.

Doing this away from Fratton will be in the best interests of all concerned but he certainly leaves with our best wishes and thanks for helping Pompey out of League Two.
