Stevenage the only focus

Stevenage the only focus

Pompey might have won three in a row to be in a good position to secure automatic promotion but Paul Cook is taking a 'game at a time' approach ahead of Stevenage this afternoon.

Momentum is important - and we certainly have that at the moment - but Cookie told portsmouthfc.co.uk his mentality remains the same as always:

'People speak about momentum and stats are available to everyone at the blink of an eye. But I just treat the games as individual events and it's just about looking to the next one - it always has been and it always will be.'

Things are looking pretty good for Pompey finish in the top three at the moment but Doncaster will 'probably' win the league now. Plymouth and the Blues still have work to do in order to join them with those in the play-off places still having plenty to play for.

Cookie went on to say if we finish in the top three at the end of the season we'll deserve to do so:

'I think Doncaster have sailed away now, while Plymouth and Pompey are in good positions and everyone else is chasing hard. I say it all the time and people will be bored of hearing it, but at the end of the season you get what you deserve.'

That's when it'll be 'a good season' after a 'good couple of weeks' in response to the Fratton Park disappointment of defeat against Crewe:

'Our disappointment after the Crewe game was there for all to see and we've had a good couple of weeks since then. But we can't say that we've had a good season yet and that's what we all want to be able to say.'

Stevenage are one of those looking to chase Pompey down - presently we hold a seven point advantage - and they're also looking for a reaction to a first defeat in nine having lost at Blackpool in Tuesday.

Darren Sarll has done a great job with Boro but despite the praise for them from Cookie we focus on what we do:

'Their league position speaks volumes about what they're doing as a club and Darren Sarll has put together a fantastic team. They have a very realistic chance of going up automatically, but we'll just concentrate on our own performance.'

Smith staying at Northampton

Personally I wouldn't have thought Cook would have brought Smith back but even if the Pompey manager wanted this he couldn't under the terms of his Northampton loan.
