'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Sunday Chimes #10 - Just a week to go

Get down to Fratton Park tomorrow (4 August) because it is all going on.

Firstly Pompey are hosting a free open training session and fans can enter the ground via the north-west corner (that is where the Fratton End meet the North Stand) of the ground from 10am, with the new home kit then being launched on the pitch at 10.30am before the start of training.

The players will also be in the Alliance Lounge (behind the Fratton End) from approximately 12.30pm to meet supporters and sign autographs.

Then at Noon there will be an unveiling of plaques to commemorate local links to World War One. One will be in remembrance of members of the Hampshire Regiment who lost their lives in the conflict and the other Captain Edward Bell MC who played for both Pompey and Southampton and was killed at the battle of the Somme in March 1918.

In the evening it is the Radio Solent Fan`s forum in the Victory Suite which is broadcast live at 7pm. Chimes will be there and report anything of note next week. You can of course listen live online in the UK. Guests include Andy Awford and Ben Chorley.

Features

Ed`s story nearing completion - delayed by the hot weather!! I know sounded odd to me too.

Youngsters go Dutch

I am aware that the Academy lads are currently in Holland hosted by Eredivisie Club Vitesse Arnhem. The tour organised League Football Education (LFE), lasts until 9th August, will help each Club prepare for the new season (Bradford City, Birmingham and Sheffield United are also involved) and aid the development of their youth-team players who will pit their wits against counterparts from top Dutch clubs.

The initiative, which is fully subsidised by the Leonardo Da Vinci fund for Life Long Learning, will provide plenty of new experiences and a chance for players to sample a different football culture and to broaden their horizons both personally and professionally.

As well as participating in training sessions with some of the country's top coaches at state-of-the-art facilities, the youngsters will also get the opportunity to attend AFC Ajax versus PEC Zwolle (Johan Cruyff Shield) and take part in a Q&A session with staff from the Amsterdam club.

Dan Jolley, Projects Manager at LFE, says: 'This is the sixth year we've been awarded funds for our 'Leonardo Life Long Learning' programme - which is fantastic. It recognises that our objectives are strongly aligned with those of the European Commission's Lifelong Learning programme's to exchange best practice between European nations, to increase staff expertise and develop skills and it also allows us to support talented young English footballers.

'Over 70 of our apprentices have made the trip and we've no doubt that it will benefit them. Culturally it's the chance for them to sample a different way of life while many of them will experience playing against continental opposition for the first time. Learning about different styles of play, coaching and tactics can only help them become better players.'

Beaten by the Cherries - how embarrassing!!

A few years ago that would have been the case but now no longer, after they finished in their highest league position last year and Pompey their lowest.

As promised in the last edition of the Chimes, Pompey have announced the appointment of Scott Bevan as first team goalkeeping coach.

Affordable football for all

Join the FSF and fans of dozens of clubs as we march on the Premier League and Football League HQ demanding 'Affordable Football for All` on Thursday 14th August (Marble Arch, central London). The game is swimming in money like never before, yet supporters are still paying unacceptable prices or being totally priced out. Let's do something about it.

And Public Sector employees get no pay rise!

Out of work

We are always telling you that promising kids don`t always make it and to keep a lid on expectations. Well remember Sam Magri the former Pompey and England U17 captain? He has been released by QPR and is looking for a club.

Currently he is on an extended trial at Crystal Palace and I know all Pompey fans will wish him all the best in getting something sorted soon.

Meanwhile Chimes learns that John Swift another Pompey born player has just joined Rotherham on a season long loan from Chelsea.

The Back Page

This time next week the 2014/15 season will have started and there will be a report from the Exeter game on the Back Page which will of course be at the Front. Confused? Well so am I and I am the editor.

We are all of course optimistic, some more than others about the prospects for the new term and pre-season seems to have gone reasonably well to date. Although what happened at Ebbsfleet was a big wakeup call and they never hurt.

One player you must feel sorry for is Danny East. Players will always pick up pulls and sprains as they try and get back to full fitness but did it have to happen to poor Danny? After that horrendous neck injury and several others knocks last season he was surely due a bit of luck this term but it now seems he will miss the start.

Danny for some would be a likely starter at right back and for others a key utility player covering several positions form the bench. Get fit soon Danny.

Letters to the Ed

Actually I always like the Chelsea programme from the early 70s that called this page 'In off the post` and it has been oft copied too.

Back on topic Lloyd Thompson wrote in the week -

'I am a published author and I am now embarking on a new venture, a book about football by the people who know football, THE FANS! I would like to feature your contributions on how real fans feel about their club. You can talk about the highlights and the low points, the memories, the nostalgia, in fact anything you want to get off your chest. Here is an opportunity to be heard. So, if you are interested in having your say then please email me your stories and feeling, this is your chance to make sure your memories of 'your team' live on forever!

Was it the first match you ever went to and what do you remember about it? Was it at your old ground that no longer exists or did you go to the first ever game at one of the many new stadiums that has been built in recent years? Which was the first away ground you ever went to and what was it like? Can you remember the events and atmosphere? Did you win or did you lose? Was your team ripped to shreds by their star striker or did your boys inflict damage on the opposition? Do you remember a particular game because there was so much riding on the result? Were you promoted or relegated? Did you win the league or cup? Or was it simply the fact that your derby rivals would have to keep their traps shut for another season because you stuffed them good and proper?! Have you ever set off for a game where strange circumstances have conspired to make you late thereby you missed all the goals or indeed failed to get to the match at all?

Send your articles to lloyd.thompson@blueyonder.co.uk

Almost time to oil the rattle now and get warmed up for the new campaign. Here's hoping!!
