2014/15 Pompey expectations - Ron Wilson

2014/15 Pompey expectations - Ron Wilson

Next up this summer to do the VP interview is Ron Wilson, this is what they said...

1 - Did you enjoy the 2013/14 season?
Yes and No. The game isn't the only aspect of going to matches, the social side is important too, and on that front it was very enjoyable; it's always a good time when travelling with Banksy, even when we break down 5 miles from the ground in Fleetwood and then get trashed in the game.

The games were however mostly very disappointing, as it happens I never saw us win one game, but there were positives. Whatmough's impressive break through, best player on the field in that Fleetwood debacle, for example.

2 - What were your highs and lows of it?
Not many of the former, but see 1, above; apart from that Chesterfield away when we for once looked like a top half team.

Lows? The injury time equalisers at Exeter and home to Wycombe rank high, but the easy winner is Bristol Rovers away, I can't remember seeing such an abject performance from Pompey in a very, very long time.

3 - Did you genuinely fear relegation at any point?
Damn right I did, up to the point Awfs got the job for the second time I thought we were almost odds on to go down.

4 - Finally on 'the past' did the season fall above or below expectations?
As far as league position went, about where I expected us to, although I had hoped for a play-off spot, that was always going to be a tough ask. Any illusions I had of anything higher than where we finished were quickly dispelled by the Oxford game; which reinforced my fears that Whittingham simply wasn't up to the job. I expected more from Barker, so that was disappointing, but it shouldn't be forgotten that the players he brought in made Andy's rescue mission possible.

5 - What do you make of the transfer dealings - so far - incoming and outgoing?
I haven't got a clue what to make of the ones coming in, won't know for at least two months and I've had a chance to see them play. As for those that went; thank the gods N'Gala and Moutakil have gone! Slightly disappointed we gave up on Jervis, I know he wasn't that good, and seemed to lack drive, but at 21 I felt he had time still to develop and improve; also disappointed Ferry left, we definitely never saw the best of him, as his new manager said, he was never used properly by Guy or Barker, not that the latter had many chances to use him.

6 - Where would you like us to strengthen further, if we can?
Defence and central midfield, specifically we need another central defender and right back and a ball winning, high energy, high endurance midfielder. If Awfs sticks to his plan to play 4-2-3-1 then the two midfielders need to be of the type I mentioned, and right now IMHO we are short there. Hollands is damned good if we've got the ball, but I have questions about his ball winning ability.

7 - Who would be your early tip for player of the year?
To echo Terraceman, anyone but the goalkeeper! I'd love for it to be one of our younger players, but other than that, I don't know.

8 - Is there a fixture(s) that you are most/least looking forward to?
Most: Exeter obviously, always good to get a first look at the new players and get some idea of what to expect. The one where we clinch promotion would be nice too.

Least: Carlisle away, that's one hellish journey, especially the trip home if we lose; if we win, any trip home is enjoyable of course.

9 - Do you think you will do many games in 2014/15?
Sadly, living in Cornwall doesn't give me much chance of seeing anywhere near as many as I'd like, but at least as many as I did this season, which was somewhere in the 'teens.

10 - Finally, what are your expectations for this season?
Top six would be nice, but anywhere above bloody Argyle!

Give these questions some thought then fire through some answers like Ron Wilson has above.

Vital Pre-Match - League 2, 1st October

The 2016-17 season continues with the latest round of matches this weekend, which will see us among those having a match in this upcoming schedule with three-points the aim of course.

Tollitt still has a Pompey chance

Well, according to Cook. He's insisting Tollitt, the former Everton academy player who had returned to Merseyside to join Tranmere on loan, can still return to Pompey.

Pompey win and lose collectively

As such Cook doesn't want the fans to start turning on individual players, which has been the case with Bennett with Smith not exactly viewed as a 'fans' favourite' either.
