The Sunday Chimes - Edition #8

Letters to the Ed

Pompey half pint wrote last week 'Fantastic volley from James Rodriguez for Columbia against Uruguay yesterday. It reminded me of a goal scored by Phil Ashworth who scored four goals in his four games for Pompey in the 1979-80 season. Anyone else remember it?`

Yes Half Pint we do and if you read your back number of Toast 7#3 you will find the following article.

'That got us thinking in the Toast office should we have our own Hall of Fame?; with perhaps those who would never make into the real thing. To qualify they need to take a special place in Pompey history but not necessarily through longevity.

Let me give you an example - Phil Ashworth who scored four goals in four games in the autumn of 1979. Signed from Rochdale Reserves by boss Frank Burrows most fans thought he was bonkers!! Pompey had two rather useful strikers in Jeff Hemmerman and Colin Garwood and Phil it thought was only cover. But after a run of nine wins in the first ten games Darlington came to Fratton Park and Burrows gave the number nine shirt to Phil.

The game was crazy with goals every few minutes. Ashworth netted twice and Pompey won 4-3. Two away games followed and Phil was banished from the squad and then Bradford City who were alongside Pompey at the top came to Fratton Park. A huge crowd was expected for the match and nearly 24,000 watched a recalled Ashworth score within the first minute and again just before half time as Pompey ran out 4-1 winners. With that Burrows dropped him again and although he did start two more home games in the next month that was it. Not a five minute wonder but a two week wonder who we will never forget. Everyone saw those goals - far more than were the official attendance anyway.

Four games, four goals and four wins - that`s what legends are made of!! Phil well he went on to Scunthorpe and was never heard of again except in Sweden where he played a few games for GAIS in Gothenburg.

He was also mentioned in 3#7 for the record. Toast Hall of Fame member #1 was indeed Phil Ashworth - four goals in four games out of Rochdale Reserves - name a fan that did not see those crackers in the Autumn of 1979?

Memories on an appropriate day

Plymouth Argyle have chosen Pompey to provide the opposition when they celebrate their annual Armed Forces Day game at Home Park on Saturday, November 15.

The Dockyard derby will take on added significance as the clash honours the servicemen and women of Plymouth.

It is also the League Two fixture at Home Park nearest to Remembrance Sunday, which this year marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I.

Argyle chief executive Martyn Starnes said: 'We think there will be a great deal of coverage simply because it's the 100th commemoration for the First World War, so we are very excited about it.

'It falls in November, which I think is an appropriate month for remembrance. It is also our nearest home game to Remembrance Day, so we think it is the perfect game to be doing that.'

FINAL REMINDER

Pompey fans are reminded that the early bird season ticket deadline is now just six days away.

The club have frozen prices for the 2014/15 campaign - but that offer ends on Saturday, July 12.

Many Appy returns?

So Michael Appleton has been appointed Oxford United boss. It means Appy will be coming home to Fratton Park on 28 February 2015, but what reaction will he get? Appy did a fine job in his spell at Fratton with that famous poster urging the fans to back the side but as with other former bosses it was the nature of his departure that left a bad taste.

Seventeen days later former keeper Trevor Carson is certain to receive a great ovation when he returns with new club Cheltenham Town. Trevor was so unlucky that Paul Jones became available and that was a target Awfs could not resist.

Pompey` s trip to Burton Albion has been switched to Sunday 7th September with the game now kicking-off at 12:15pm. The reason is Sky Sports will be showing the game live.

We are off on holiday!! Next Chimes should be on 20 July with a report on the Shareholders meeting held on 18th.

Thanks for the great article. I don't suppose many players have been discarded after scoring a goal a game. I didn't understand it then and I still don't. Whilst Phil's stay at Pompey was brief at least it was memorable!

Cracking article as ever Dave, must remember to call it 'Chimes' now tho and not 'Toast'!
Think it will be a mixed reception for Appy tbh, yep he did well in tought circumstances but did not always cover himself in glory and the monor in which he departed was particularly sour... hey ho we focus on the HERE AND NOW and not the past eh!

On this day in history...30th May

A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, 30th May.

No Crawley return for Tubbs

Tubbs doesn't have a future at Pompey, he's on the transfer-list but offloading him could be difficult given his wages. These wouldn't be anywhere within Crawley's reach.

Pitfalls of Sheffield Wednesday loanee returning

As Catlin put it 'the gamble' of aiming sign Sheffield Wednesday loanee Lavery has to be one Pompey fans understand. It isn't as cut and dried as saying 'he's a free agent' sign him!

Lassie coming home...well sort of!

A-box-to-box player, capable of defensive duties, with ability to burst forward with intent to make things happen - Diarra is Pompey's man and wants an England return. I jest of course!
