Now the excitement REALLY starts

Now the excitement REALLY starts

The players returning for pre-season is always a good time, as you know the season is approaching - with us returning a week earlier than usual it was not 'quite the same' was it?

Now that the calendar has ticked round to July 1st the excitement, and anticipation, of the season ahead really begins.

Well, it does for me anyway...

I always feels that the football season is really approaching when we get into July as this is getting closer to the time when the pre-season friendlies start being played and when they kick-in you know the season is just weeks away.

Fortunately I have had a holiday, and of course the world cup, to pass the time but must say I have enjoyed the break and managed to get some jobs done around the house too.

What a difference it has been this summer too, it has been 'relaxed' as its not a complete team rebuild and we do not seem to be one step away from crisis again do we - it all seems very positive with Andy Awford going about his business pretty quietly and effectively.

Even with the 'problems' of years gone by I think I have probably, most of the time, said that I was 'looking forward to the season ahead', as much as I might have thought I was - or had convinced myself I was - I do not think that I really have.

Last season was the first one in a while I had really looked forward to mind as our situation had changed, but I do not really think that I ever seriously had any real 'expectations' for it as it was going to be a tough season but was NOT meant to be as tough as it was mind!

Given the squad we already had in place, the players we have managed to retain and others that we have brought in I really am excited about the 2014/15 season and cannot wait for it to begin and DO have expectations for it, dare I say 'high expectations' even.

I am certainly optimistic about what we can achieve...

For the next couple of weeks though I will continue to enjoy the world cup, Wimbledon and the weather - getting out into the garden to do some outdoor painting to add to the indoor painting also done - before the season begins again.

Bring it on, I genuinely do think that Pompey will have something to shout about this season, what about you?

I think it has to be this season that we are at, or near, the top and get promotion or failing that, narrowly miss out. Another disaster of Barker proportions would dampen all the 'Big Club' notions and the benefits we derive from that (not that we are; I'd settle for 'Medium Sized') and then we are getting back to having to compete, and better, Wages-Wise with the rest instead of Fan-Wise. Trouble is I am confident EVERY season, always see the squad as top-notch and feel we just can't fail. So it's Division 4 Champions for me, then.

I thought our squad was, or should have been, better than we saw last season but if this one cannot continue off where we ended the 2013/14 season I would be surprised - play-offs at least for me...

Swindon loanee gone but willing to return

I think Smith did pretty well for Pompey in the end but his loan from Swindon is now over. With a year-long extension triggered a fee would be involved if the Blues wanted him.
