Will Bird fly the nest?

Will Bird fly the nest?

Does Ryan Bird still have a future with Pompey?

At the moment this is not known, even Richie Barker has said as much to the News - although methinks he is probably being somewhat coy with his thinking.

He is unlikely to make his views publicly known one way or t'other at the moment is he...

What he has done though is challenge him to 'prove himself' during his loan with Cambridge, which to be fair seems to be going ok.

I reckon his loan will be extended, perhaps not for the entire season but perhaps for another month or so and then depending on our position in the league he could come back for the final weeks of the season and be given another crack in the 1st team?

Although I would not be at all surprised by would be a decision not to take up the option of the 2nd year in his contract.

Barker will, for me, have other ideas on his attacking options and I do not think that Bird will feature in them.

I could be very wrong of course, I usually am!

My thoughts would be though that as much as you could argue that few have shown much to enhance their reputation or show they are 'capable' of playing at this level, I cannot say that I have really seen enough from Bird to suggest that forging a long-term career with us at Fratton is going to happen...

One that 'could' still have a future at Fratton, depending on how his recovery process goes, is Tom Craddock.

Remember him!

Something, depending on how he does recover from his knee surgery, that works in his favour is the fact that he and Barker have history from their Hartlepool days and Barker believes that Craddock will be there or thereabouts ready for pre-season.

I don't know about Bird but Craddock has done absolutely nothing for Pompey since he arrived and I would be amazed if he could do anything to change my mind.

Against the grain I know, but Bird does have what it takes as a striker. What he's been lacking is something that's absolutely essential to a striker, and that's a well placed supply from midfield and the wide areas. Nobody can score goals if they don't get the ball... Fact I'm afraid, and something that needs dealing with at Pompey or the drought will continue... PUP
