'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The month ahead...January

January is here; we have another six league games to play this month as 2014 gets underway with the games continuing to come thick and fast. It does not look an easy month at all!

Being faced this month are Southend (a), Accrington (h), Oxford (a), Mansfield (h), Morecambe (a) and Wycombe (a).

Looking at these fixtures back in August I think I would have fancied a number of them, looking at them now I think I have to be honest and say that I look at only one of them thinking 'I genuinely believe we will win this one', and that is a worry!

Southend (a)
New Years Day is potentially the toughest game of the month, so at least we get that out of the way early!

Southend beat us at Fratton Park, and given the league position that they currently hold, and the confidence that they must have compared to us, it is hard to see 2014 starting with anything other than another defeat...

Accrington (h)
If you had told me that Accrington would turn around their season to be one of the inform sides in this division after our meeting at their place earlier in the season I would have laughed at you so much I think I would have wet myself!

At the time of writing this I think they have lost just twice in 12 games and their relegation worries are a far cry from ours.

Got to be a game that we target for 3pts at Fratton, the worry is I can only see us getting a draw, at best...

Oxford (a)
I think Oxford have had a bit of a wobble of late, and did not enjoy the best Christmas. I wonder how much Chris Wilder being linked with the Pompey job has played a part in this seeming 'blip?'

We did them in the Paint Pot Trophy, at the Kassam Stadium too, but lets be honest we will have to go some to repeat that, and if we get a point I would be well happy!

Mansfield (h)
Mansfield were flying when they entertained us, and continued to do ok after the draw back along. They have been in free fall for sometime now.

Obviously this is not an easy game, and is not one we should be 'expecting' to just turn up and win but this is genuinely the game this month where I feel we can, will and should get the 3pts.

Morecambe (a)
Morecambe went on an amazing 2-month unbeaten run after we beat them at Fratton, they went from relegation candidates to an injury-time equaliser against them from being top!

What a contrast in fortunes since that day at Fratton Park when we literally battered them and 3-0 was a disappointment in some ways as we could, and should, have won by an even greater margin.

Give me a point now and I will be happy, then again the home form has not been great for them this season but our form full stop has been poor!

Wycombe (a)
The month ends with the tricky trip to Wycombe.

Again this in one that we could get something from, but my confidence is not high at the moment and I would have to say that a point at best is what we will achieve, I of course hope to be proven wrong...

What a month to kick-off the new year!

I am not being negative, merely realistic I think, but if we get much I will be surprised, as I really cannot see much coming from some bloody tough fixtures.

A massive improvement, performance wise, will be needed if we are to match, preferably better, our return of 4pts and 5pts from November and December respectively. Anything less than that amount from our 6 games and I really think we will do well to stay up...

You cannot just flip a switch and turnaround poor form, and if we go into February continuing where we ended the year it will be a long, long way back in the closing months.

I can only see Mansfield as a game I think we will win and if we can get somewhere between 6-10pts, the higher end especially, it will be a productive month really as we would have got some decent points against decent sides.

Like I say you cannot flip that switch and turn a poor run into a good one, especially the longer this goes, but if somehow Richie Barker is able to bring in a player or two to improve, and lift us, January might prove to be a decisive month for us in a positive way...

We might not have got anything against Southend, but I wasnt expecting anything anyway tbh! I was encouraged by what I heard on the radio tho, we need to take performances like that forward but have a bit more luck in front of goal (at both ends!)
