First impressions?

The appointment has been made, Pompey officially announced on Monday that Richie Barker would be our new manager.

In all honesty, I cannot lie; as much as I was not opposed to Barker coming in he would not have been my personal first preference.

That being said I like the fact that he is a young, eager and hungry manager, and I was not ever (I must stress) against his appointment, far from it!

Ok, perhaps the qualities mentioned cannot be viewed as qualities enough to make him the right appointment, but in his brief career to date he has also shown that he can work to budgets, has done a decent enough job in league one and two and will happily bring though younger players.

Coming in with him is the wealth of experience that Steve Coppell brings with him.

Having taken in his thoughts, on various platforms, I think that I have been impressed with his early thoughts.

I like the vision that he has, but he is not putting any public pressure on himself, the players or the club by 'claiming' he can do this or that or 'promising' anything - he seems to have come in with a very level headed, grounded and most of all realistic approach.

Given his involvement with youth set-ups previously I am very encouraged by his apparent willingness to give youngsters a chance, his 'if they are good enough they are old enough' thoughts are music to my ears.

Coppell will offer him, and us, plenty of help and back-up (without drawing a salary of course). He is well respected and has a background in the game that commands respect but its clear to see that Barker is the main man, he is the boss!.

Yep, he is certainly talking a good talk, and given time and patience to stamp his mark I reckon he could walk the walk as well.

If he can not only send his side out to 'entertain us' but also get the results then as a paying punter I know that I will be more than happy!

He does need to come in and hit the ground running mind, that much is clear but you can rest assured that it will be a great atmosphere this weekend and he will be wanting to kick-off with a bang against Newport.

Some opinions will always be divided, we will never all agree on an appointment will we.

The best way for the fans to become fully united will be for Barker's words off the pitch to be followed with actions from him doing 'this and that' to influence what happens on it...

What are our early thoughts on Barker then guys?

My first impression is that he is talking to the press more than the players.
wellyit His time with the players will come and I expect he will want to talk to them all individually as I don't think he has worked with (m)any of them before. It will be play my way of play elsewhere! Impressed with him but it is a results game and following Guy will be a tough act to follow as Guy is a legend!
A good article Rug. Wellyit - a bit harsh. What new manager doesn't speak to the press? Was he expected to come in & say nothing?!! As for GW being a tough act to follow, I'll say nothing... Good first impressions from the man. Let's give him a chance to deliver results, as that is all that matters. Also, surely we can't all earn 525 dollar??
He admitted that he didn't meet the players yesterday and there have been more 'fresh' articles today. I thought the plan was to give him a week working with the players before his first match. I can understand having an unveiling, but I would rather have seen photos of him working.
Early thoughts on Barker eh ... Well I was pretty impressed how he conducted himself in the press conference and buoyed by the fact that Steve Coppell will be at his side for any help he needs whatever. I think we have a very strong team.. although it remains to be seen what he will do long term with the backroom staff. Player wise he is used to developing players and I chuffed that he won't overlook the academy grads .. but only if they are good enough as some seen to think that every grad will make it and some aren't good enough despite what we might think. I think all in all we have the right man for the job.. so onwards and upwards
Tim .. what's the 525 dollar ?
Oh it was some junk thing saying you could have earnt "525 dollar per hour". Been removed. Seems like Barker needs to win over some. Not sure what he has supposed to have done wrong, but hey. Each to their own. Every view is valid insofar as being someone's view.
