The appointment has been made, Pompey officially announced on Monday that Richie Barker would be our new manager.
In all honesty, I cannot lie; as much as I was not opposed to Barker coming in he would not have been my personal first preference.
That being said I like the fact that he is a young, eager and hungry manager, and I was not ever (I must stress) against his appointment, far from it!
Ok, perhaps the qualities mentioned cannot be viewed as qualities enough to make him the right appointment, but in his brief career to date he has also shown that he can work to budgets, has done a decent enough job in league one and two and will happily bring though younger players.
Coming in with him is the wealth of experience that Steve Coppell brings with him.
Having taken in his thoughts, on various platforms, I think that I have been impressed with his early thoughts.
I like the vision that he has, but he is not putting any public pressure on himself, the players or the club by 'claiming' he can do this or that or 'promising' anything - he seems to have come in with a very level headed, grounded and most of all realistic approach.
Given his involvement with youth set-ups previously I am very encouraged by his apparent willingness to give youngsters a chance, his 'if they are good enough they are old enough' thoughts are music to my ears.
Coppell will offer him, and us, plenty of help and back-up (without drawing a salary of course). He is well respected and has a background in the game that commands respect but its clear to see that Barker is the main man, he is the boss!.
Yep, he is certainly talking a good talk, and given time and patience to stamp his mark I reckon he could walk the walk as well.
If he can not only send his side out to 'entertain us' but also get the results then as a paying punter I know that I will be more than happy!
He does need to come in and hit the ground running mind, that much is clear but you can rest assured that it will be a great atmosphere this weekend and he will be wanting to kick-off with a bang against Newport.
Some opinions will always be divided, we will never all agree on an appointment will we.
The best way for the fans to become fully united will be for Barker's words off the pitch to be followed with actions from him doing 'this and that' to influence what happens on it...
What are our early thoughts on Barker then guys?
