Yet another month has all but passed, I am genuinely frightened at how quickly time is going these days and want to ensure that I am doing enough in it to enjoy it!
Did I enjoy the month of October as far as football goes?
In all honesty, no I cannot say I did! I would say that I certainly did not as much as I went into it hoping that I would, but all in all (points return wise) it was not really a bad month.
What were the expectations for it though, and what was actually achieved?
Lets take a butchers...
Pompey v Rochdale?
Pompey win 76%
Rochdale win 12%
The month kicked-off with Rochdale coming to Fratton, given how September ended it was important that we got something!
Confidence was high (probably a little too high for me I thought) that we would beat Rochdale, and quite convincingly too despite them being right up the table...
I had to miss this game due to a family gathering, and it would appear that I missed something as we did indeed win convincingly, 3-0!
Plymouth v Pompey?
Pompey win 90%
Plymouth win 5%
Virtually all expected us to beat Plymouth, and given how they have gone in recent times and how they were doing this season at that point I was among that way of thinking - well, I certainly felt it was a game that we should have been winning anyway...
What a truly shocking game it was, fortunately for me this away game was more like a home one but had I travelled far I would not have been best pleased to be honest.
The positive was that we came back from a goal down to make sure we did not lose and drew 1-1 but Plymouth are a poor side, we did not look any better and the players that we have definitely are better than that...
Pompey v Bury?
Pompey win 81%
Bury win 13%
Bury were struggling, they were right at the wrong end of the table so the expectancy that we would win was high - rightly so!
And win we did, 1-0.
How the hell did we did win that game though, Bury pretty much battered us for much of the game and had they a striker that could finish would have given us a hefty beating...
Torquay v Pompey?
Pompey win 68%
Torquay win 4%
Wycombe should have been played next, well technically it was of sorts as it started but did not finish as it was abandoned at half time so that meant it was off to the westcountry to face Torquay, with the expectancy levels of a win high enough but not as high as one might have thought?
Once again we came back from a goal down to avoid defeat and earn a 1-1 draw.
That was not good enough, the performance for large spells of the game were below that I think we should be seeing from players that we have and a point at Torquay was not enough.
Was it a good month?
Lets put it this way; we got 8pts from the 4 games played.
Going into the month I said that Guy Whittingham was under pressure and needed to get at least 9pts from the 5 games we were scheduled to play, but that was a minimum - due to the Wycombe abandonment we obviously only played 4 games.
So, was 8pts from those that we played a good enough return?
To be fair you would have to say yes.
Football in not 'played on paper' I know, but on it you could argue perhaps not.
Alas going through the month without defeat is a plus but Plymouth and Torquay are poor sides and no one will convince me that a point against each is a good point - ok, coming from behind to win makes it such but they are sides we really should beat.
Performance wise (I cannot comment on Rochdale too much as I missed it completely, even without commentary) I do not think October was good enough, and more could be gotten out of the players, but the points return, and an unbeaten run, papered over any cracks...
