Was it liked?
Was it needed?
That can be debated that maybe not, but facts of the matter it is done and you cannot undo what is done...
What on earth am I talking about I would guess some of you are thinking?
On Tuesday an anti-Guy Whittingham article was put out by Vital Pompey following a suggestion from a VP member.
To be fair this is a site 'for the fans by the fans', as it says on the tin, so it is only fair to put out the views shared by them.
Hindsight is always a wonderful thing though!
Whilst I do not think it was wrong to put out what was put forward perhaps I would have been better off putting it in the forum, at least pushing my 'are you sure you do not want to add anything to it' views a bit more before I published it as it was?
Like I say, it is done and dusted and I cannot change it.
In response to the article I left the following comment...
I have a lot of time, and respect, for Guy and thank him for stepping in when we were in desperate need of him to do this but I have to admit now that his 'getting Pompey' probably isnt enough any longer and in all honesty I have to admit that I do not think he is the right man to take us forward...
Perhaps he is still learning but I am not sure he is learning as well as he should from his mistakes and do not think that he is getting the best out of the players that he has.
He does no appear to have a plan B if plan A is not working. Looking at him on the touchline against Plymouth be looked lost, Connolly and the other coaching staff around him were all making notes then going to him from time to time.
We need to consolidate at the moment of course but if he makes it through to the end of his contract I think it would be in our best interests if we parted company in the summer instead of extended his rolling contract.
It goes without saying that I hope he can turn things around but I am not convinced that he can and in the long-term would not be the right person for us.
Before it is said my expectations for this season are top 10, so I am not expecting too much from him (or the side) or an instant promotion but do think that we could be getting a little more from what we have and think that ultimately we need to look beyond Whittingham in the long-term as seeing the bigger picture of what next season, and future seasons will also bring have to be considered and I would think fans will drop off if we are not looking to be showing some ambition going forward.
Pains me to say it but I would have to agree with the writer of the article that I do not think Whittingham is right in the long-term...
I do stick by those thoughts really, I am not sure he will prove to be the right man but I want to make it clear that I do support Guy and back him and the team, and think that when he does something good (as do the players) he (and they) should rightly be praised but we should also be able to put out what is viewed as a 'negative' view when it is warranted, be that against Whittingham or the players.
When doing such a thing I do not think this should constantly be met with the standard, 'at least we have a club', 'we should be grateful that Guy stuck by us' etc. views.
Like I said I have much time and respect for Whittingham, and sincerely hope that he can be the man to take us forward but would have to say that at this point in time I would not be wanting his contract, that expires in the summer, renewed.
Sorry if that offends!
Perhaps saying I wanted him sacked now, as that writer did on Tuesday, would be wrong and not something I necessarily agree with at this stage mind.
That said there is still a long way to play this season...
A couple of wins cannot completely sway a way of thinking, nor should a couple of defeats but I would think that by the end of this year we will have a better idea as to just what he can, or cannot, do for Portsmouth football club going forward, right?
An opinion is just that, an opinion. We all have them, and are all entitled to share. Perhaps offering up something more than just a rant, with it more rounded, is the way to go though but I will keep encouraging people to share them.
Opinions can also change, so whilst I might not be convinced he is the right man now that is not to say that I will not think, come the end of this year, or end of the season even, that he still will not be of course.
I hope that Whittingham can prove (as lets face it I am sure a large number have reservations but find it difficult wrestling with the 'should I have a go' way of thinking) myself, and others wrong with what we might be currently thinking and I can look back at the end of the season, firstly, and then several years down the line and say 'boy was I wrong'...
