Earlier in the season Jed Wallace's form did lead to a few questions being asked of him.
Was he believing too much in the hype surrounding him?
Had he become 'bigger' than Pompey, both in his own mind and in reality?
Was that 'step up' to a club higher up the pyramid than Pompey just something he was waiting for?
The answer to most will never truly be known, in full, but we can safely say that Wallace is too good for league two football!
I would not say he is bigger than Pompey, as no player is and with all due respect to clubs that he had been linked to we were bigger than most of them, even if we played at a lower level...
With the transfer window closing this really made a difference, it removed the constant speculation and that seemed to allow him to relax and just play his natural game.
No doubt his form in the past month or so has again impressed scouts 'that' goal at York was simply incredible and would have got the grapevine buzzing. I would have thought that several scouts turned up at Fratton - as I guess they usually do - to watch him at the weekend, and they would have been impressed again.
Such has been his continued (following that slightly lacklustre start to the season) form links with Stoke and Leicester have also now surfaced and talks has intensified that he could well move on in January.
Will Wallace be doing that, or even sign that much talked about new contract?
He had insisted that he still wants to continue these contract talks, but whatever happens he will see out the season at Fratton as he feels that he owes the club a debt of gratitude for giving him his break.
With each window that passes that we are able to keep him I think it is a bonus, I do think that we will do well to keep him January if I am honest, then again I felt the same about last summer and we managed it!
Surely the longest we can expect to keep him would be the end of this season regardless...
All being well we can at least agree a new deal with him, as if we cannot manage that we will get less when it comes to 'compensation' being agreed with him moving on as a free agent next summer.
It would be a nice if he could do this as it would add a little bit more to his value!
The ideal thing would be for that new deal to be signed, for us to sell him to a premier league side and have him loaned back to us to continue his development...
Alas I think that, as much as him running down his contract will do us little favours, we should just enjoy the wonder of Wallace as long as it lasts and hope that with his help we can first and foremost ensure we climb the table to a more respectable position in the league.
On top of that earn some extra money with some decent cup runs.
