What can I say about such a poor result and more so, a poor performance? With the away form seen as key to the season to capitulate at the home of one of the so called lesser lights of the division is a disaster.
The whole day was a total disaster from start to finish. A goal down in three minutes, the so influential Simon Ferry limping off after a quarter of an hour was far from the start Pompey would have wanted after a long journey north. Although Jed Wallace did equalise early in the second period that was the sign for York to score three more times in just nine minutes and Pompey were staring down the barrel of a hammering. Only some fine saves from John Sullivan kept the score down and sub John Marquis score a debut goal in the closing seconds.
So what went wrong? And who is to blame? Those are the questions that all Pompey fans were asking in the pubs on Saturday night and most were naturally calling for the head of Guy. Are they right to do that though? Let us have a look at some of the facts.
• Guy has spent absolutely nothing in getting his squad together and although allowed to increase the numbers it was all done on the cheap.
• The main target this season must be survival and then a long and slow re-building process must begin.
• Guy was the fan`s choice as he was cheap and fitted the Pompey family mould.
• Sacking managers is an expensive business and that is something that Pompey cannot afford.
• Who would replace Guy at a cost the club can afford?
Remember at the outset Guy did not want the job and only grew into it during his caretaker spell last season. He is in this for the long haul and WE are all in this together. There is no reason for knee jerk reactions this early in the season we need to all pull together and help get the side out of the slide. Guy will know he has made mistakes and he needs to learn from them. the staff need to pool their experience to get through the crisis as some believe it is.
Pompey have always had a bad time at Kit Kat Crescent or whatever it is called these days and some saw it coming. The only good point was the travelling army still numbered 1,357!! Although by all accounts they were none too happy.
Pull yourselves together Pompey and fast!
Chix has been running a Hall of Shame in the forum recently and on selecting Ian Baird storagematt I was at QPR in October 1988 (using my memory here) when he scored his only goal for us. I was behind the goal as he tapped in. Sadly on their plastic pitch, we lost 2-1 & ironically Terry Fenwick scored their late winner.`
Strange that Matt should mention that goal because I was talking to a fan on a train last week and he too mentioned that goal. His question to me was 'what colour shirt was he wearing? - Baird that is. OK Toasters over to you.
All ticket fiasco
So the all ticket fiasco over, or is it? York had one turnstile open yesterday for home fans after pressure from all areas including Toast.
Explaining the move, communications director Sophie Hicks said: "The board have reviewed the whole all-ticket situation and decided to open one turnstile tomorrow. We feel that is fine having conducted a safety review and we want to encourage as many people to come to our games as we can but would still advise people to buy their tickets in advance where possible.
"The all-ticket matches this season have all been to mitigate police costs but, after reviewing the situation and considering the response from fans, the board have decided there will be no more all-ticket games this season and next season apart from in exceptional circumstances.
"It has not proven the right approach but, sometimes, you have to try things to see if they will work. We were quite surprised by the negative effect on our attendances although we don`t know to what extent performances and results have played a factor in that.
"The negative response to all-ticket matches was also surprising because they are a common scenario in football and it is likely that every match at the community stadium will be all-ticket."
Meanwhile Pompey have announced that Rochdale fans travelling next Saturday will have to pay on the day with no advanced tickets available. But Pompey do not have any cash turnstile and tickets will have be purchased through the ticket office on the day.
A few weeks ago we told you that the Shakers had promised free travel for fans coming to Fratton Park on 19th October. This has now been confirmed on the Bury website with the notice -
Coach Departs : 8:00am
Cost : FREE IF MATCH TICKET IS PURCHASED
You will probably all have read the Guardian exposé on the conditions in Qatar and the accusations of forty recent deaths on building sites, workers not paid and even denied free water in near 50 degree heat.
The whole of football agrees that to play a World Cup finals series in this setting is a huge mistake and the Qatari administrations comments that the deaths were not linked to the World Cup are of course irrelevant. I even had a phone call in the week from RT Television who wanted me to do a live interview on the Qatar situation - I believe they are the Russian station that broadcast in English.
Sadly I had to decline as I would have needed to be in London which was not possible - I would have course have had plenty to say!!
Did you all enjoy Antiques Roadshow last week? Ed did!
Bit short this week as I have had broadband problems - poor excuse I know.
