Pompey non-seeds for cup draw

Pompey non-seeds for cup draw

The first fixtures of the 2013/14 season will be announced on Monday, with Pompey finding out who they will face in the 1st round of the league cup (Capital One Cup).

Coming into the league cup in the opening round is something we have done regularly in recent times, whereas previously in 'the glory years' we would get away with a 2nd round, even a 3rd round entrance I believe when we played in the uefa cup!

Such is the slide that we have been on though we go into this seasons 1st round draw as a non-seeded club in the southern section of the regionally split draw for the opening round, alongside the likes of Cheltenham, Newport and Torquay (no offence intended to any) knowing we could face the likes of southern rivals Bournemouth and Brighton, who are both seeded along with the likes of pre-season opponents Charlton and relegated from the premier league last season QPR, managed of course by Harry Redknapp.

Speaking of Charlton I would suspect that 'if', by some fluke, we were drawn against them the 'pay what you like' pre-season friendly would be called-off?!

One thing that I am pretty certain is that unlike most recent seasons we will take this competition, and the FA cup and Paint Pot Trophy, seriously and not just go into the games willing to rollover and accept defeat.

The league two fixtures are also out next week, AND FINALLY after all the years of fighting Vital will be free to publish these fixtures in full as dataco have been beaten in a long-running battle!

Done Deal - Free agent Davies arrives

No sooner had I mused the central defensive options wondering would Cookie bring in another have we announced a deal for former Accrington man Tom Davies!

No longer a midfield option

Barton played most of his football for Pompey in central defence. He came to Fratton as a central midfielder but those days are behind him, as far as Cookie is concerned.

On this day in history...1st July

A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, 1st July.

Good luck Ben!

In an ideal world Davies would have agreed a new deal and stayed with Pompey next season but Grimsby have been able to offer him the stability of a two-year deal we couldn't.
