Happy, and rightly so!

Happy, and rightly so!

How amazing is it to be another couple of weeks or so from pre-season training knowing that Pompey pretty much has a squad in place.

A decent squad at that too!

This squad is full of players with potential, or proven ability and willingness to be here, that will actually benefit us.

What a far cry this is from recent seasons, we seem to have gone into pre-season for years now scratching around for cast-offs merely to met criteria, in many cases, to simply take our place in the league...

Guy Whittingham made early moves to secure the signing of 7 players, Monday's securing of Johnny Ertl meant that a 5th player from last season was convinced to sign a permanent contract with us, a few were on longer contracts anyway.

When you look at this squad - on paper - while some might not be household names you can see a good balance of youth and experience, with a decent amount of quality running through the spine.

So many of this squad also have experience of playing in, some actually gaining promotion from, league two - some even have experience of league one looking potentially further ahead too!

Keepers
Phil Smith
John Sullivan

Defenders
Sonny Bradley
Dan Butler
Joe Devera
Danny East
Yassin Moutaouakil
Adam Webster

Midfielders
Johnny Ertl
Romain Padovani
Jed Wallace

Strikers/wingers
Patrick Agyemang
David Connolly
Tom Craddock
Ashley Harris
Andy Barcham
Jack Maloney

A few more tweaks and we are done!

Midfield is where we are still a bit light, and if Jed Wallace does end up moving on even more so, so I would expect this to be the area that Whittingham looks to add a player or a couple of players more - remembering the academy and development sides will pad out the squad further.

Whittingham, as he has said he is, has every right to be happy!

He has put together a decent squad and did this early on to ensure we can gain the maximum benefits from this going into pre-season to make sure we do this throughout late June and July as opposed to throughout the season, as we usually have in recent seasons...

It would be good to have young Marlon Pack back - he is out of contract at Cheltenham and could play in midfield or as a defender.

I am almost moved to tears that all the stories are about players & not finance. Oh how I wish I lived nearer Portsmouth, a season of hope ahead for the first time in many years.

Stability is a wonderful thing and we can start again to have some hope, that will grow. Good luck to us all.

Vital View - League 2, 14th January 2017

Doncaster retained a healthy lead at the top ahead of Plymouth and Carlisle. Cheltenham moved above Notts County with only Newport below them in the Football League now.

Video - Pompey 2-1 Leyton Orient

Conor Chaplin made up for missing a penalty - the third spot kick in a row I think we've missed isn't it? - with a brace as Pompey deservedly saw off Leyton Orient 2-1 at Fratton Park.
