Nobody particularly expected Portsmouth to be in this position at the start of the season, but then nobody expected to see them collapse so dramatically of late.
Harry Redknapp was speaking to the Daily Star and said: "We were second best and had no desire. They were stronger and hungrier than us - I can't have that. We need to find the right blend to the team.
'One or two of them looked a bit off the pace. I'm disappointed with one or two performances. Kanu has been the only player who has scored regularly for us this season. We need to pick up points and finish as strong as we can.
'But it has been a fantastic season so far and it would be a shame to see it drift away. We must get going again.'
True, it has been a fantastic season and it certainly would be a shame to see it all "drift away." The fact is however that our forwards cannot score - so perhaps Harry ought to make sure it is Kanu he is looking at when he says he has scored regularly for us this season. Kanu has only scored once in the last ten league matches, so quite how that makes him a regular scorer is a bit of a mystery.
Manchester City arrive at Fratton Park on Saturday and few will need reminding of the fact that it was against them that Pompey`s season took an amazing turn around on the 11th March last year when a double strike from Pedro Mendes kick started the revival. Now of course David James is playing in goal for Portsmouth, but many will be hoping that a win over City will again give Pompey that shot in the arm which is so desperately needed. Maybe it is time for Todorov to make a comeback, it was his goals too that helped Pompey avoid relegation last season?
