Redknapp: Kanu a Regular Scorer

Nobody particularly expected Portsmouth to be in this position at the start of the season, but then nobody expected to see them collapse so dramatically of late.

Harry Redknapp was speaking to the Daily Star and said: "We were second best and had no desire. They were stronger and hungrier than us - I can't have that. We need to find the right blend to the team.

'One or two of them looked a bit off the pace. I'm disappointed with one or two performances. Kanu has been the only player who has scored regularly for us this season. We need to pick up points and finish as strong as we can.

'But it has been a fantastic season so far and it would be a shame to see it drift away. We must get going again.'

True, it has been a fantastic season and it certainly would be a shame to see it all "drift away." The fact is however that our forwards cannot score - so perhaps Harry ought to make sure it is Kanu he is looking at when he says he has scored regularly for us this season. Kanu has only scored once in the last ten league matches, so quite how that makes him a regular scorer is a bit of a mystery.

Manchester City arrive at Fratton Park on Saturday and few will need reminding of the fact that it was against them that Pompey`s season took an amazing turn around on the 11th March last year when a double strike from Pedro Mendes kick started the revival. Now of course David James is playing in goal for Portsmouth, but many will be hoping that a win over City will again give Pompey that shot in the arm which is so desperately needed. Maybe it is time for Todorov to make a comeback, it was his goals too that helped Pompey avoid relegation last season?

Kanu is rubbish! Only arry can't see that!
I wouldn't go so far as to say he's rubbish. Granted he's not firing on all four cylinders at the moment, but maybe it is time he was given a rest from first team football for a couple of weeks. The weather will be a bit better by then and hopefully it will have allowed him time to sharpen up a bit. But I certainly fail to see where Harry gets the idea that Kanu is a regular scorer. Maybe he was up until November but not since.
lazy but great at linking play
Dear harry. kanu has no goals in his last eight league games. the only thing that proves is he is not scoring regularly as opposed to scoring regularly. Any other simple statistical matters you can't work out I'd be happy to clarify for you.
The Rabbi
lets see how kanu does tonight for Nigeria against Ghana?
The Rabbi
He'll probably miss the plane!
Don't think it's fair to say he's rubbish, as admin says his linking play is great and the real problem is that strikers need the ball to score, we're just not getting the ball into the areas that matter anymore. very few strikers would be able to score regularly with the service that is being provided by Pompey at the moment.

TruePompeyBlue - Its at brentford.
The Rabbi
SteveC - I do not think he's rubbish, just jaded.
The Rabbi
god once again i have to agree with the Rabbi, i'm still not sure who is the best to play along side him ( i was going to say compliment him but harry does that enough)
(if not too much)
Lets just hope we actually turn up against city. Got a bet on with a mate over how many kanu will score this year, i just hope this is one bet i lose!!
Still, I remember thinking (at the end of last season) our midfeild would score all the goals this season. I thnik Mendes & Gary have had one each, & Matty of course has had a few. Still, cant help thinking its the midfield that needs to give the forwards a bit more service over the passed few games. I thnk the ManC game is as big a game has been for us this season, need to break this run!
Yes to fail to beat another ordinary side on our own turf will add some more woe to our current disappointing run and will not augur well for the next campaign.
Actually The Rabbi, isn't that Peterboro?
Johnson's poor (ish) form has affected the supply lines to the forwards. Kanu was never signed as a goalscorer so his goals are a bonus - makes you wonder who harry expected to score during this season. Cole? no chance - back-up at best. Lua Lua? A flash harry player who can't do anything consistently (except injure himself). Benji? Barn door, cow's arse and banjo spring to mind. Well, looks like Toddy is the only hope, then. I like Toddy.
Funny that, Kanu failed to score last night for Nigeria. Et tu Pompeii, what did Pompey sign Kanu for, if it wasn't goals? Decoration? Someone for Benjani to talk to during matches?
The Rabbi
Kanu reminds me a little nowadays of that sketch when Harry Enfield was playing for England back around 1950 - a little flick here, a little flick there, lots of ******-footing and getting nowhere!
well we know Kanu can do it, the issue is to make him do it again. I did here from a media freind that the relationship between the manager and both Kanu & Cole has been damaged a bit following the media interviews and i feel if the club had money Kanu wouldnt be here now. My Gooner mate said he ( Kanu) always trails off second half of the season because of his age. I am wondering if it might be worth risking a poacher like Toddy along side him, but as Rabbi said Kanu is jaded so probably shouldnt start and i guess Toddy wont be match sharp. The partnership option is tricky because LL is messed up and playing for himself at the moment and we are effectively playing with one up front anyway cos Benji cant score.
We need a finisher; both Benjani and Lualua tend to be providers than finishers. So that leaves us with Cole, Kanu and Todorov. In my opinion, a less than match fit Toddy would still be a much better option than either Cole or Kanu who are just not able to cut it. The problem with Cole is that at 35, he is really just that bit too old but becuse he knows Teddy Sheringham is still playing at nearly 41, he feels he can do the same. Kanu is not fit full stop and cannot run either, so is really not worth putting a shirt on him at the moment. So if Toddy was to play with Benjani up front, I feel we would more likely score than not - after all, Toddy done well for us towards the end of last season so why shouldn't he be able to now?
Linking play is all well and good but lets face it we judge strikers by the amount of goals they score and well he just isn't. Maybe it's the fault of those around him, not getting the right balls in to him etc but...
Rabbi my comment that i thought it was unfair to say Kanu was rubbish was in response to bmb's first comment on the page and had nothing to do with any comments you had made.
Steve C
Kanu in my eyes is lazy we need some one with pace and power!! GGrrrrrrrrrrr
tommo you might want to add ungratefull to that as well. but we have no money and i understand we are saving up for Muntari.
Kanu is by no means rubbish, quite the opposite, he's just in need of a rest. If he scored a goal or two Saturday (maybe unlikely! If he even plays?) opinion would change, the break would benefit him and us... Lets face it Kanu isn't an out and out striker in any case, neither is Benjani. Kanu may have this goals this season but if I had to choose between Benjani and Kanu I'd have to go Benjani...
Better a tryer that can't score than a scorer no longer trying uh ?
Spot on!!! Kanu is a very good player who can hold the ball up but if he can't run for very long he's no good to anyone!! Oh toddy toddy, toddy toddy toddy toddy, TODOROV. Whats harry got to loose? the forwards arn't scoring anyway.
So Toddy's not even in the squad for Saturday, so I guess he won't get a chance until everyone's injured or we're in 15th position ! Maybe Harry will play Douala up front ???
