Ashdown: I Can Challenge James

Jamie Ashdown believes that he has the "ability" and "determination" to challenge David James. A Goalkeeper, which he rates, as the best keeper in the Premier League.

'David James is unbelievable but there's no reason why I can't push on and challenge. He's one of the best goalkeepers in the Premiership but I'm not just here to sit on the bench.

'I have to push him along. I want a place in the side and I'm determined to achieve that. It's been a difficult year for me and it didn't help that I was injured during the season. But I'm a hell of a better player than I was at the start of 2006. I've learned a lot, especially from David.

'In October and November I wanted to leave but I changed my mind in December. The club have also changed their mind about what they wanted to do with me so both parties wanted to sign the new deal. Now I'm happy to be here.

'This club are really going places and if that means having to be patient to get back into the team then I'll do that. It does stick in your mind a little bit about when you're going to get a chance after all I don't play football to sit on the bench all the time.

'But I'm remaining positive and determined to prove my ability.'

Do you think Jamie Ashdown has what it takes to eventually replace David James?

I think he's been a decent goalie and is a good prospect but like anyone, push will come to shove when he takes over through injury to DJ - then we'll see. I'm positive though.

Quality & experience are difficult things to replace.

I never liked James but he has been best goalkeeper in ur league this season

Good to see the lad has the confidence to take over from Calamity!

Now that is the spirit we want, nice one Jamie, excellent attitude - Andy Cole should pay some attention to this.

He will have to take his chance if it comes along but can't see Jamo giving him many, if any chances though. Injury permitting Jamo can and will be the number one for sometime yet... I've always like Ashdown so hope we can keep him, would have no problems with him coming in if needed, glad he stayed instead of Kiely even with the help he gave us last season although I have to admit I was never overly struck with Kiely... It is an excellent attitude for sure, others could learn from it, if he still feels the same a year, maybe two down the line could be another thing though...

He's right about going places - the problem is that those places are located within the British Isles not across the sea.

Rome wasn't built in a day thought was it pompeygray... Things take time, the season isn't over yet, I'll cling to that hope until the City game. If we lose that I'll accept that we'll not be crossing the sea to play in Europe next season...

Rome may not have been built in a day, but it sure did burn to the ground in a day.

David James is brilliant if you keep him off the Play Station, once whilst playing for Villa against Manyoo he leapt for a corner and before he came down he had collected three gold coins and killed the pink dragon that was guarding the princess, oh yea he got an extra life too.....

James has been superb, Ashdown will be a top keeper and for once the club have got it right by keeping him and letting the much older Kiely go.
Steve C
yep i agree Steve C, i also remember the pre -season freindly at Bournemouth ( pre hollywood times) Kiely was just rude and ignorant to Avrim Grant who was trying to go through a kicking the ball out straight exercise with him. Some wit screamed at Kiley not to listen as it might make him accidently kick the ball to someone wearing an OKI shirt. Kiely took the advice and his kick out's never reached an OKI shirt
