Redknapp is renowned for bringing the very best out of players no longer wanted or deemed has-beens but surely even he is going to have to surpass himself to convert a player who has been the butt of many a joke over the last few years. As always I put complete trust in Redknapp but how can the signing of Traore be a step forward? If Svetoslav Todorov, Richard Duffy and James Keene are deemed not good enough for us as we look to move forward how can Traore be viewed otherwise?
Many of us had concerns over David James and Kanu (I hold my hands up and admit myself included) when they were first linked with moves to Fratton Park and they have more than proved these doubts wrong. They are still being viewed as has-beens by many outsiders but Traore can not even be called that as he has never done anything in the past to convince many including the vast majority of Liverpool and Charlton fans, not to mention the millions of fans at all the other clubs around the globe that he is anything more than an average player.
The signing of the Mali international is in no way a step forward for Pompey, the fact that he has been the butt of many a joke from myself and others isn't my concern for this my concern is that he has rarely, if ever done anything to convince me that he is any good. His signing to me isn't one of a team looking to consolidate and build on our current sixth place in the Premiership it seems more of a signing for a team who believe that maybe we are over achieving and would be happy to maintain a mid table finish, which we would have but after going so far we have to be looking to Europe now.
I'm far from happy with the signing of Traore and despite the fact I find it highly unlikely he'll prove the doubters wrong I hope he will and will of course get behind him as I do any other player that does, or could pull on the blue shirt of the mighty Pompey.
When the ball hits his thigh we give out a big sigh its Traore…
