Time To Show Pompey The Money

Since the summer Pompey have been linked with player after player in potential big money moves but none of these are really coming off. The rumour, suggestion and speculation amoung the often gutter press has been rife recently with shadow's cast over Sacha Gaydamak`s ability to provide us the funds he is said to have.

With Pompey things are rarely as they seem and my doubts as to Sacha's money have grown more and more as time has gone by with the recent names being linked with the club almost all being done so in loan capacity or low budget transfers; this does not suggest to me that we have much money to play with.

In the summer transfer window we were reported to have a budget of £20-30 million, in the current window this is being reported as being as little as £5 million! How can we go from moves for players such as Defoe for £12 million, Farfan for £10 million, Petrov for £6 million and even the almost nailed on signing of Fernandes for £10 million to then being unwilling to pay even £6 million for him now? We have resorted to the £1 million signing of Djimi Traore and loan captures of others. Muntari is again being linked but should this be any more than merely a loan deal I would be surprised.

Spending money for the sake of it buying over paid mercenaries is something that I dread Pompey doing but with us sitting in sixth place in the league, casting aside the age old argument of playing in a run down stadium with below standard facilities, surely we are a club that could attract players that will insure that a place in Europe is achieved come the end of the season but money needs to be spent on them. Do we have this though, my worries that we don't are increasing all the time!

Most of the big money moves have only been rumoured in the papers but am I the only one that is beginning to worry about us even having these kind of funds to buy them in the first place?

PLAY UP POMPEY!

Muntari would show he means buisness! I dont doubt him though personally, the season he takes over we go 6th & have our best season yet! coincidence, or money to pay top class sighnings that we have already made!

Spot on article..My thoughts as well. We are right to worry. I have always had my doubts about Gaydamak. The only good thing is Harry Redknapp keeping us in an elevated position. I dread to think what will happen if he goes..

You need money & brains. HR is a god send whatever you think, heaven help when he goes. Selling Pompey dream to outsiders ain't that easy. Bribe them a bit & we have a chance.

excellent piece and spot on rugger's, my mate in media street says since Sasha's father is under the spotlight our finances are dried up and will remain so until next season. I think our two lates "swoops" prove the point, it is the usual go in for somebody, make an offer that you know wont be accepted then buy on the cheap. But as i said to you once at the season start, even if Harry could afford to go to sainsburys, he would still go to the £1 shop. theyoung french mid fielder is good but I just dont see quality back up in our last two signings.

I have to agree here, we've had our best season for years and the best way to keep this going would have been to signal our intention by bringing in 2 or 3 quality signings. This hasn't and probably won't happen and I hope this doesn't mean that all of the hard work already done will go to waste

I agree, whilst we are all being told that a 'top half finish' would be real progress, ending up 10th would be a massive dissapointment after being in the top six since August. We do need quality signings this month to keep up the momentum - but this is Pompey, after all

You don't have spend big money to be successful. Kanu's success so far this season is an example of that. Mandaric didn't splash out silly sums on players. he spent most of his money on other areas of the club. What we should be doing is building up a youth system to bring young players through. You only have to look at Arsenal to see the savings that could made.

Thank goodness we're flying high !! For fans that are hardly used to the elevated position that we find ourselves in,I find it amazing how critical and despondent so many of you are. Let's just trust the people who are currently dong a magnificent job, regardless of whatever funds are available, and ENJOY it while it lasts, however long that may be.
