POMPEY TO GIVE MAN U THE BLUES?
Old Trafford looms large on the horizon once again, results don`t tend to tilt towards Pompey favourably at the theatre of nightmares, the last win 49 years ago is testimony to that statistic.
Pompey`s superb start to the season built mainly on the defensive stability at the back will have to re-organise this weekend, Linvoy`s dodgy hamstring has seen to that, and Glen Johnsons`s thigh puts him also in doubt, this could see a surprise recall for Andy O`Brien to partner Sol, and for Pamarot at right-back. Pamarot will certainly have his work cut out trying to keep a rampant Ronaldo quiet, the Portugese has been in scintillating form since the world cup, and Master Rooney seems to have rediscovered his midas touch at just the wrong time also.
But hang on, don`t we have the Premierships top scorer in Kanu? Unlikey it may have seemed at the start of the season, but seven goals speak for themselves, and don`t we possess one of the Premierships most competent midfielders in Mendes? Pedro is worth a 7 out of 10 score in every game he plays and will be looking to add to his collection of long range beauties again come Saturday afternoon.
Early indications are pointing to a 4-1-4-1 formation against Fergies men, Kanu to warm the bench, and the ever willing Benjani to plough a lonely furrow up-front, with Fernandes to step into midfield with Davis and Mendes to play in front of the back four. This may look negative on paper, but Pompey have the ability to break at pace, and also a strong looking attacking bench to exploit tired legs late in the second half.
Much will depend on which Manchester United turn up on Saturday, the team which is setting the pace in the Premiership, or the lacklustre complacent team of Wednesday night who lost out in Copenhagen , much will also depend on the carnival surrounding Alex Fergusons 20th anniversary in charge and how this will over shadow proceedings on the pitch. I wish Fergie all the best for his celebrations, but hope they will be soured by a blue crest on the Old Trafford pitch.
P.S memo to Pamarot, look out for that Ronaldo bloke, he tends to run at you.
Play up Pompey
Paul
