What Do We Need In January?

What Do We Need In January?

What Do We Need In January?

Harry Redknapp has been quoted as saying that we don`t need any players in January. That was refreshing to hear at the time as he always seems to want more players. This article however, doesn`t agree.

At first this may sound stupid but… we may have to buy a goalkeeper. Jamie Ashdown has spoke of his frustration at not having anything to do on Saturdays, which saw him loaned out to Norwich for a month. Dean Kiely isn`t getting younger and I, like many others, expect Deano to hand in a transfer request come January. That would leave Pompey with David James and Jamie Ashdown (presuming he doesn`t hand in a transfer request) another keeper would then be required.

YES!!! Portsmouth have a fantastic back four, many would disagree. We have only conceded five goals in nine games which is unheard of for Pompey. We don`t have any depth in the defence though. Is the cover we have, good enough anyway? Pamarot was given the run around by Robben. We still need a left-back in my eyes and a centre back that could cover at right-back. If the Chelsea game wasn`t enough evidence that we need strengthening at the back, then how about the fact that the reserves have lost their last two matches 5-0.

We have loads of midfielders but I think Harry messed up a bit in this department. We have so many centre midfielders; Gary O`Neil, Pedro Mendes, Sean Davis, Richard Hughes and Manuel Fernandes. Out of those; only Gary O`Neil and possible Richard Hughes can play in wide positions. Down the left Kranjcar and Matt Taylor can both play and on the right Gary O`Neil and David Thompson compete. There is still Korroman and Douala who can play in wide positions. We will at some point in the future need a couple of quality wingers although not this January.

We`ll we have enough of these. Kanu and Benjani have won best partnership with 42% of the votes but that is one of eight possible partnerships that harry can choose from. Kanu has been scoring for fun so far this season but will it continue? Benjani is working as hard as ever but will he ever get 15 goals a season? Andy Cole looks like he will be used as a super sub for most of the year, can he score ten goals doing that? Lua Lua looks like his minds else where at the moment and has never been known for scoring loads. Basically at some point Pompey will need to buy a goal scorer, one that can play 90 minutes preferable. I love Kanu to bits but if he scorers twenty goals this year I will eat my hat!

January Signings

-Another Goalkeeper (if) either Jamie or Kiely leave
- A left back and a right back (one needs to be able to play centre back as well)

Long Term Signings

- Two quality wingers (one left one right)
- A proven 20 goal a season striker

Do you agree with my assessment of what Pompey need to become regular European contenders?

distin is a good player but would want to start and linvoy and sol have been solid together
23/10/2006 11:27:00
i agree. Definatly need a left back
23/10/2006 11:56:00
I know of Davies links with that lot down the road, but I think he's still a good player and the battering ram Pompey have needed for some time. Woefully short at Right Back with Pamarot showing his abilities on Saturday, and yes a left back would be welcome. I think Lua Lua will move on in January

AT LAST people recognise we need defensive cover, i also agree we have screwed up a bit on the mid field side, I dont think Thompson is up to it becuase of his injuries, and i am not convinced about Krunchie yet. Following his performance for Fenerbache against the Newcastle I would still love to see Steven Appiah here, they lost but he was a class above anybody else. But there is definetly scope for some exits. Goalkeeping is an odd one, apparently Harry doesnt rate Jamie so much given his reserve team performances, but given the dire state open door policy of our reserve defense its not surprising. Keep Jamie he's one for the future, im afraid Deano will agitate for a move anyway and we should let him go, then use the wage saving for another young keeper..... As for a striker, we still havent replaced the Yak, it needs doing. there now that's the world put to right in one lunch break.

oh and if 5 live are to be believed, Davis may be off to boro in january anyway.
23/10/2006 17:27:00
just because he hasn't started the last two matches he is linked with a move, makes me sick
23/10/2006 17:42:00
wouldn't mind the return of routledge, he always looked likey to make a goal
23/10/2006 20:44:00
distin would be great too. can't see linvoy going all season without an injury

Cook's already said the loan Tollitt is undertaking with Tranmere doesn't mean an end to his Pompey career as this isn't a forerunner to a Blues exit in the New Year.
