James And Campbell Omitted Again!

James And Campbell Omitted Again!

Having been handed a glimmer of hope of England recalls these have been snatched away from David James and Sol Campbell as they have again been omitted from Steve McLaren's latest squad.

England face Macedonia and Croatia in their latest European Championship Qualifying ties, and after being offered what was thought a lifeline Steve McLaren has opted against restoring the two in form Pompey players to the squad.

With the quality England have in central defence now it was always going to be hard for Sol to regain his place, but not just saying this from a biased Pompey point of view he is playing as well, arguably better than most, John Terry aside. Jamie Carragher has made several uncharacteristic mistakes this season, Wes Brown isn't even in the United team and Ledley King has only recently returned from injury for Spurs so why couldn't he get a look in? Brown has probably been picked as a full-back option, and maybe King as a holding midfield option, which if so WHY? He's got Michael Carrick and Scott Parker for that!

David James, who has only conceded ONE GOAL all season on the other hand should without question have been in this squad, he should have never been left out really. It's good to give the younger members a chance but not sure that Chris Kirkland and Ben Foster are both ready for the squad yet, despite being quality goalkeepers, an experienced member in James is needed should anything happen to Paul Robinson, who in all honesty isn't in the greatest of form for Spurs this season anyway.

I can't see anyway back for either now as if they couldn't get in this time round I don't think they ever will. It is starting to appear that as with so many other previous England managers if you are not with a "fashionable" or "big club" you don't get in! Pompey despite their fine form and highflying Premiership position are clearly neither. I know Kirkland is with Wigan and Foster Watford, but these are only loans and in the record books they'll be known as Liverpool and United players respectively when picked here.

If you are McLaren's golden boy from Middlesbrough or you're English and play for Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United or Tottenham you`re an almost certainty! Everton are coming back into fashion but that said I can't really argue with the players they've had included, and Newcastle's Scotty Parker is also having a fine season.

McLaren's got his own ideas, which is fair enough, and he wants to look to the future but it makes me laugh, he says people will get picked on current form but not many can match that of James and Campbell surely?

Plus Wes Brown, Wayne Bridge, Kieran Richardson, Shaun Wright-Phillips and to a degree Jermaine Defoe are not getting much, if any game time this season and they are in, Ledley King is not long back from injury and his golden boy Stewart Downing has been out injured himself recently!

Current form is clearly a deciding factor Steve...

Don't know about how cares storagematt... but I for one do care. I'd rather they delivered for us but it gets frustrating seeing players constantly overlooked just because they play for "smaller clubs" and I don't just mean Pompey players. I want Pompey to have England Internationals but it seems that until we are up there with the "big boys" it wont happen.

pompeyrug, i think you have been a bit nieve, Campbell and ferdinand are far more succesfull than Terry and ferdinand but McClaren is a political animal, has made Terry captain & so Sol were never going to get in. James is a link to McClaren's past that the ginger boy cannot afford to have hi lighted. He is nothing more than Sven part deux, a 2nd chopice weak manager who got took some lucky breaks against weakend UEFA teams whilst boro manager, the minute he came up against a full strentgh team they got masssacred.. England have played a lot of dross at the moment, but when we play say Italy, France or brazil you will see that even with free lunch venables not a lot has changed. The players knew it wasnt going to happen so as long as it doesnt affect their performances for us we need to be gratefull. Just look at the history of mcClaren he never closes the door but anybody who has had the "glimmer of hope" speach has never got into either the Boro team or England team. UNLESS of course the Sun says he has to include them.

Understand both sides of the argument. We don't want to be depleted with the burden of additional games but we as a club would like recognition for the ability of some of our players. At the end of the day though if England and Pompey are doing well (with or without a Portsmouth influence) that's all that really matters.

pompeygray, ginger Mac was fully supportive of Svens big team only philosophy so we shouldnt be surprised. Even the Telegraph noted in an article referring to Downing saying Boro connection keeps O'neil out of the frame. As England fans we have sunk to believing that thrashing Andorra is living the dream. Guaranteed position for the under performing Lampard i guess, you never know he might score against Macedonia's female second eleven.....what a guy

Just a little 'Jack' Russell - you certainly know how to bite. Now if Harry was the England Manager ?

don't think you'll see McClaren at Fratton park any time soon, he won't head further south than London, just like his Swedish mate before him

What do we hope for from the rest of the season?

There seems to be a lot of unhappiness around, despite a pretty decent season in my opinion. Well, certainly our best season in a long while.

Debut delight...kind of!

It wasn't a result, and in many ways a performance, for Sheff United loanee Freeman to remember too fondly as he didn't really have a great game against Orient? Then again who did!

Tubbs has left the building

Tubbs has finally left Pompey; perhaps his destination is something of a surprise then again there had been some 'rumours' recently of an Eastleigh interest.
