Denilson Training With Pompey?
With Pompey's start to the season, and our signings made thus far only raising the profile of the club it is being reported that Brazilian World Cup winner Denilson is training with us.
I'm a little confused, as there seems to be conflicting views on this. The 29-year-old 2002 Brazilian World Cup Winner is said to be training with us, Harry Redknapp quoted as saying this in the Mirror.
"We are taking a look at him"
However following his release by French side Bordeaux (this is where the conflicting views begin) in the summer he was said to have held talks on a lucrative move to the Middle East to sign for Saudi Arabian club Al Nasr.
Some suggestions say that Denilson has already joined Al Nasr, with this taking place last week on a one-year loan move from Bordeaux, with his contract not yet having expired? This move would have come outside the transfer window however so surely such a move could have only happened on a permanent basis should he have been a free agent? Other reports merely say he has been talking to the club, keeping his options open by spending some time with us. In which case as he would after all be a free agent so he could sign for Al Nasr or Pompey, with him reportedly photographed training with us.
Denilson is a world-class talent who first burst onto the World stage in France, at the 1998 World Cup Finals. His impressive displays as Brazil looked to successfully defend their World Title won in the United States in 1994 would see them end the tournament as runners-up to the host nation France. These displays would see Denilson in 1998 become the then World's most expensive footballer following a £20 million plus move from legendary Brazilian club Sao Paulo to Spanish outfit Real Betis.
Denilson would suffer from a series of injuries whilst with Betis and would even be loaned to Flamengo for a short while however his remarkable close control and ability would still see him often linked with moves away on a permanent basis from Spain, and he would be a part of the successful Brazilian World-Cup winning squad of 2002 in Japan and Korea.
The Brazilian signed for Bordeaux in the summer of 2005 for an undisclosed amount. With a fee involved, unless very minimal it makes you think that maybe the indications that he is in fact not a free agent could be true, unless with his wages being so high the French club, despite having the income from European football available felt they could only afford him for the one season? It could also be a case of giving him the season as an extended trial and take it from their with it possible fresh terms could not have been agreed, which is another suggestion being made.
All theories could in fact prove irrelevant as if he is in fact training with us, as he is widely said to be, with as I say photographical evidence (which I haven't personally seen) of him doing so then he must in fact be a free agent and available to Pompey so Al Nasr's claims of his signing could well prove somewhat premature...
From my own personal point of view the thought of having a Brazilian, and a fantastic Brazilian (aren't they all!) in Denilson at that playing at Fratton Park, despite some injuries over the years really excites me and only pushes us further in the direction in which we all want to go.
